Great Ocean Road - Highlights

Post by Glenn »

We are going to Tasmania for our first big trip in the MH but before jumping on the Spirit we thought we may take the opportunity to see the Great Ocean Road. Our timetable will allow about a week for that part of our trip.

We would appreciate some feedback from those members who are familiar with the area on highlights that must not be missed and suggested route.

I have looked at the road map and is it better to take the inland route from Geelong through Colac onto Warrnambool and then travel east along the coastal road back to Geelong? Is a week to short?

All suggestions are appreciated in advance because Victoria is all new to us.

we travelled the Great Ocean Rd a long while back, before became all commercial, the best way to see it was from the Vic Bells Beach end and head toward SA, travelling the other way you are on the wrong side of the road to see all the spectacular bits while you are driving.

Terry, I showed your post to Louise and said that we should travel your suggested direction. She said but that means her side of the MH will be closer to the cliffs, she doesn't seem so keen to be closer to the spectacular bits.

All she will see is big rock walls and the odd sheer drop when the road turns back the other way if you go from SA to Vic. By going from Vic to SA she will see spectacular scenery between the bits where she closes hers eyes and hopes not to hear those words, "oops, wrong way"
The road doesn't quite hang over the ocean, you need to come up to the Grand Pacific Drive for that, and it looks much better from the top of Bald Hill than it does driving over it, there is a walkway all along the edge so you don't get to see that breath taking view thing. Now Macquarie Pass and Jamberoo Pass, they are good for the straight over the edge views

A favorite spot of mine has always been Cumberland River CP , about 5Km SA side of Lorne.
Can be a bit expensive in season but camped beside the river, coin slot showers, and walks along the Cumberland River to the Falls.
Good continuous walk to Lorne via the Falls as well.
Great fresh fish supply at the Lorne jetty as well if your there when the fishermen come in with their catch..
