Sundeck now complete!

Post by Greynomad »

A year or so ago, we had a derelict garden the previous owners left us converted into a sundeck by ripping out all the overgrown mass & laying a concrete base with brick paving. We kept the small hedge, cutting an opening where the bricklayer built us a curved step.
But it looked a bit bare.
A market umbrella helped, but there was nowhere to put our beer/wine/whatever & magazines if we used our travelling easy-chairs (which was the plan).
So, in a book of "Outdoor Furniture & Structures", I spotted a table pattern I liked. The original is a proper 6-seater table... far too large for my purposes. So I redesigned it as a 500x700mm side-table.
Little did I realize there was a lot of careful engineering in the original, and changing the size changed the angles of the supports under the slats! Some missed out on end-supports entirely!! With some on-the-fly re-engineering I made it work.
There was a deadline pressure: I wanted to finish it before going to hospital for surgery on my hip. I did it.
This is what the finished article looks like:

Thanks, Dot,
Even in winter, we have fine sunny days here. Very pleasant if you're in the sun and out of the breeze. The hedge protects us from the wind (even though it's short), and the deck is far enough away not to be in the shadow of the house but close enough to make it just a few steps away. ;)
Once I had the table in place and the umbrella inserted, I decided to give it a test-run; had an hour's snooze in my laid-back easy chair. Not at all chilly. :D

But how do you move the sun into the right position for shade? :)

Hi all...
MrC,
Once I'm out of hospital you're welcome!
Chuck, I wish the jugs were full of Durif!!
They are for the summer annual flowers (Petunias or something... SWMBO is the gardener-in-chief!)
Surgery was a success, according to Dr on rounds this morning. I'm gift-wrapped from hip to below knee. :-} Post-surgery pain is not too bad. Will see how it is tomorrow.
Hoping to be upright then, & maybe home same day but more likely Thursday.
No pix... Surgery Porn. ;)
Regards & God bless,
Ray
