I think they were both in the Air Force during the war, I know Gorton was a fighter pilot, not sure what Gough was though.

Whitlam was a navigator RAAF Gordon was a fighter Pilot thats why he had the scarred face as with many fighter pilot they e=get badly burnt exiting their plane as the fuel tank was in front of the cockpit and they had to actually climb out of the cockpit after breaking the top as it often did not let go properly. Many died like this half out the cockpit but I hope that is not it.
