No should be returned to rego office, you might be tempted to drive it.

In SA, yes, if the rego is converted to seasonal. The Mazda was unregistered for over 5 yrs, re-registered in 5 mins online for 3 mths, SA does have it's benefits 8-)

that's a brilliant idea for seasonal motorhome travellers.

That is a great idea. So, unfortunately, it will probably never happen in Qld. In some ways they are still 10 years behind the play up here.
But the weather is good

I put the number plate into the rego site and all it said was it was not listed as registered. I want to find out whom it was linked to

On your next trip to SA, camp up in a caravan park and pay for a weeks site fees, Nurioopta in wine country is a good spot. Take the rego plates with you, either drive the toad or catch the bus to Gawler about 20mins by car or an hr by bus (but you get to see some interesting spots ) and present your rego papers (and pension card if you have one) and tell the nice counter person you want to transfer rego to SA. They will ask for proof of residence, the caravan park receipt acts as a rental payment, and then they will ask if you want to transfer your licence as well, I chose not to, but it's your call ..... They either use your new licence number as your account number or give you a customer number. In the unlikely event they want to know why you want to transfer rego, try telling them you are on the first leg of an around the block touring holiday and expect to spend some time seeing SA before travelling either up the centre or across to WA. At a routine traffic stop, the Policeman said if you plan to spend 3 mths or more in SA you need to transfer the rego and you are here vto do that ....... but more than likely they will be happy to just take the money .... so don't ask the pension card discount question until most of the transaction has been completed .... then you have SA rego, that can be changed to seasonal rego when ever you want, and pay online, no further questions asked.
SA just wants your money, but Murray Bridge or closer to Adelaide will want to justify their checking stations and try to make you jump through all the hoops, maybe they get promotion points for making life difficult at Murray Bridge, who knows, but we have never had a hassle free transaction at the Murray Bridge office.
