Lesley, that has been the longest three months with so much happening. Hope you are happy with all the new things (that of course you well deserve).
We had our plumber out just after you had told us your story and I asked him how we could prevent similar damage. He showed us where the tap to turn off all the water inside the house and how to leave the exterior water on for the gardens, or in case of fire. That was advice that we have followed every time we leave with the van.
Hope you and Erich can now have some amazing travels and feel safe to leave your beautiful new home.

Lesley,
Our washing machine is connected to a tap inside the laundry, as has been the case in all of our homes.
I shall remember to turn that tap off (along with the dishwasher) when eventually we are allowed to travel interstate!!
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Ray, please, be aware that the most common failures are the flexible hoses connected to your sinks etc. Many older homes have more quality fittings. You will need to do an audit of all your fittings. We can close the taps on the dishwasher, toilets and washing machine. However all of the fittings to our sinks and vanity basins are flexible hoses with no tap to turn off. We will be changing all of them to ball valves and turning off before we leave home. Forewarned is forearmed!
