What meats To Feed Pets.

Post by Dot »

Allergies, availability, price, nutritional factors, sustainability, suitability, farming practices and processing methods can all factor into the decision making process.

While chicken and beef are probably the most commonly used 'meats' in commercial pet food, their nutritional value is sometimes questioned as the mince is often high in fat, contains a large proportion of meat meal (bone, cartilage and offal) and is farmed and processed using methods that directly deplete nutrition. Pet food made from highly processed, poorer quality protein sources, such as chicken and beef, are linked to the increased incidence of pet allergies.

I recommend pet owners try to feed unique protein sources – ie. those not commonly used in pet foods - and select organic, free range meats that haven't been subjected to heavy processing and chemical treatments.

Here are the top four meats I recommend for your pet's diet.

Kangaroo
My pet meat of choice. Fresh kangaroo meat has been widely used in Australia as pet meat for more than 30 years, and is widely available in Australia at pet supply outlets and supermarkets. Nutritionally, kangaroo meat is superior to all farmed meats. It is low in fat (3-4%), high in protein, and high in vitamins and minerals. Because kangaroo is not farmed, the meat is truly free range, and organic. Kangaroos graze a very wide variety of pastures, wild grasses, shrubs and trees, and as a result of this variety, they enjoy excellent health, and their meat has a wide array of macro and micro nutrients. Kangaroo meat is a unique protein and thereforeideal for treating pets with food allergies. The harvesting practices are highly sustainable and the meat is processed to extremely high standards.

Wild Rabbit
Wild rabbit is one of the most suitable all-round meat sources for dogs and cats. Like kangaroo, wild rabbit is free range, organic, low in fat, and has a high nutritional value. Until recently, wild rabbit was widely available in Australia, having bred in plague proportions. However, the recent introduction of Calici virus has decimated the rabbit population, and supply of rabbit meat has largely been replaced with farmed rabbit, which unfortunately, falls victim to all the problems that befall intensively farmed chicken and pork.

Green tripe
Tripe is the stomach lining of cattle and sheep and green tripe is unprocessed tripe which hasn't undergone the bleaching and boiling necessary for human consumption. Green tripe is a highly nutritious meat source as it is very low in fat (2%), highly glandular (contains enzymes), and is loaded with probiotic micro-organisms. Tripe is classed as a ‘white' meat (meaning it has a low amount of myoglobin, the protein that makes red meat red), and has historically been used for dogs with sensitive digestive tracts, or food allergies. I substitute kangaroo with green tripe when treating difficult cases of allergic dermatitis in dogs (and occasionally cats) with great results. Green tripe is affordable but can be difficult to source.

Offal
Offal (organ meats) including liver, kidney, heart and lung are very rich in protein, vitamins and minerals and ideally should make up about 10-20 percent of your pet's meat intake. Purchase human-grade offal, which has undergone inspection to ensure the meat is parasite-free.

something wrong with our mutt, he prefers popcorn, chocolate and chippies, with a slab of cheese thrown in. Lucky for him he only gets a little of each. We vary the tins, including fish once a week, and some dry food. I found the tins last longer if we don't open them for him.

Yes all of my animals would pref those things but until we nearly killed one of our boys with kindness, I now am very strict with their diets. Our Dobe had inflammatory bowel disease and was really ill until we put him on the Tripe and the Vet's All Natural food, same for our last cat but she had fresh rabbit . Miss Meow has human grade roo and other ingredients added. :D

When we had a Labrador, one neck of mutton per day kept him going until he was 10yo and then we had to put him down because a fuel delivery person dropped a 44 of fuel onto him and after repairs the arthritis got to him.

The Princess Crunchy gets lightly sautéed blade steak, or Aldi single serve loaf type cat food, probably because she thinks she's doing the cat out of a feed, won't eat DOG food, that is for other creatures.
The cat likes a mix of kangaroo mince, or gourmet fish variety cat food that sounds far too go to give to a pet if you believe the description, or a small tin of the dogs food, probably because he thinks he's doing the dog out of a meal  We have to make do with sausages
