What Do Essential Fatty Acids (EFA'a) do?

Post by Dot »

Omega 3 and Omega 6 EFAs are the two essential fats required to sustain life. Both Omega 3 and 6 are integral to the cell membrane and they need to be perfectly balanced within the cell membrane to ensure optimal cell function.

Natural sources of EFAs
EFAs occur naturally in raw animal fats, cereal grains, fruits and vegetables, however, while Omega 6 EFAs are relatively robust, Omega 3s are easily destroyed by normal cooking and processing techniques such as heat, light and oxidation (contact with oxygen).

As a result, some pet food manufacturers use ingredients high in Omega 6 EFAs and low in Omega 3s, which has resulted in a dramatic shift from the natural, balanced, dietary intake of 3-5 parts Omega 6 to 1 part Omega 3 to an imbalanced intake of up to 30 parts Omega 6 to 1 part Omega 3!

Symptoms of EFA deficiency
If your pets come into contact with – even mild – allergens, an imbalance in the proportions of Omega 6 and Omega 3 in their diet can dramatically impact their immune reactions and skin. Where EFAs are in balance, Omega 6 and Omega 3 will direct the cells to react in a less inflammatory way. In contrast, where EFAs are imbalanced – an excess of Omega 6 and an Omega 3 deficiency – it can create a pro-inflammatory, over-reactive immune system, resulting in abnormally strong immune reactions to normal or mild allergenic stimuli. In humans this has been linked to hayfever, asthma and allergies while in animals symptoms can include fatigue, dry, flaky, itchy skin, dry coat, brittle nails and suffer joint pain.

Balancing the EFAs in your pet's diet
If your pet eats a balanced fresh meat diet that includes added vegetable matter and appropriate vitamins and minerals, such as my Complete Mix, Raw 76 and Health Rolls, you are providing them with the perfect balance of EFAs.

When your pet's diet might require EFA supplementation
Pregnant and lactating pets and growing puppies and kittens need more fatty acids of all kinds, as do pets with chronic disease or those recovering from injury. My Vets All Natural Omega Blend Oil provides a pure natural source of Omega 3 and 6 EFAs, combined with fat soluble vitamins A, D and E.
