Dot, they will all manage to either survive the rough or not. :)
The choice of style of vehicle is very personal. If there is a need to have a car towed behind the camperhome, I really don't see it as that much different to a car/caravan combo. The decision is best to be made by the person writing the cheques.

Actually not many dirt tracks remain these days unless you want to get off the beaten track & get into real 4x4, most of the highways between towns are sealed roads, there are exceptions like visiting Cape York but folk even go up there in 2 wheel drive vehicles these days.

A proper 4 x 4 motorhome built for the job. Finding a proper 4 x 4 caravan that doesn't fall apart on the rough tracks or up so high to get ground clearance that it's like towing a parachute and prone to fall over clambering out of off camber river crossings.
An all wheel drive motorhome, meaning every wheels drive not just a wheel on the back axle and one on the front axle, will go places and get out of places a caravan would hold the 4 x 4 tow vehicle in a bog ...... I remember someone's OKA that has a lizard painted on it, couldn't get enough traction to pull Petels rig out of the bottom paddock on wet grass, so it needs to be all wheel drive selectable for those patches that a 4 x 4 just isn't enough.
