Modern Kombi conversion to transport you back in time

Post by Kit Kat »

IF you miss the days of peace, love and Kombi vans or wish you were there, an orange bus at Nambour might take you back.

A new Volkswagen van on display at the South Queensland Caravan Boating and Fishing Expo has been remodelled as a modern-day Kombi.

Garry Crick Volkswagen has re-badged the T5 Transporter as the Kombi Beach'n'Bush.

The dealership's Lance Hunt said the camper conversion was aimed at buyers who were interested in VWs for travelling.

The Beach'n'Bush has a double bed, storage drawers and compartments, a laminate bench top and a fridge freezer.

It misses out on the curves and rounded headlights of the Kombis of 30 years ago, but it does have a dual battery system, air-conditioning, and a swivel passenger seat.

The Beach'n'Bush on display at the expo has been painted in luminous orange with primrose bumpers and wheels.

At $60,490, or the expo special price of $56,560, the Beach'n'Bush is more expensive than the Kombis getting around on the road today.

But Mr Hunt said the two-litre, seven-speed automatic also went a little faster than the old buses.

Sadly, the kombi has come to an end, the true enthusiast would say the last kombi was in '78, before the new shape T3, they don't accept a T5 as being a kombi at all  how can you have a Kombi with the engine in the front?
Volkswagen say the requirements for frontal distance between driver and windscreen in the latest regulations means the kombi concept can not be continued so the kombi era has come to an end.
I had a laugh about the "At $60,490, or the expo special price of $56,560, the Beach'n'Bush is more expensive than the Kombis getting around on the road today", a pre 1967 kombi "split window" in good restored condition will fetch a lot more than $60,000, the price of the classic '74 bay window (the most sold kombi in Aust) in fully restored condition will fetch around that price and climbs every year, far high in England, up around the $100,000 mark actually so a lot end up in shipping containers and go off shore, that forces the price of the remaining ones up even further
