Experience is a wonderful thing. It helps you recognise a mistake when repeated.

For email, try Thunderbird.
I installed it for a neighbour and it seems to install and run OK.

I have just found out that an application I wrote is having problems with W8.
A bugger to sort out when you don't have a PC with it to test on.
Might have to talk nicely to that neighbour when we get home in a couple of months....

Well I did work out (eventually) how to get Linux Mint going. So fast ...
Just pop the CD in & fire it up. Take it out & fire it back to 8 again.

We don't have any issue with fruit in our house. We eat it as its too hard to use as a screeen

Thanks Martin.
I'll give it a couple of more days till I decide.
I suspect I will go down that route though. A mouse would be good too but that defeats the purpose of a laptop I reckon.
I'm getting into it now!!!
One thing I've had to overcome is how to get my parallel port printers to work.
HP Laserjet is VERY cheap to use!!! I had a USB to parallel cable here & it auto installed. Plugged in the old printer & away we went!
Trying to remember it all is the hardest part.

One thing I've come across that I recommend is for everyone to turn off "fast start up" (not "fast boot"), or you'll never get back into the BIOS if the HD fails. You need to get into the BIOS if you ever need to reinstall or restore your system from a DVD etc. You've been warned! (Toshiba)

I hate the touchpads, Wireless mouse is easier
I wish I had gone for a touchscreen as well, love my tablet, and nearly at the stage where if I can find the right sized tablet that I can hook a hard drive to, the lappy will be gone, except as occasional use
