The main problem was each set of cells are linked via a copper strap/bar and I could not have placed the battery strap over the top without the lid. Another issue was if I used the lower section of the box I still would not have any downward pressure on the cells that slide into the box. In other words the box would be secure but the cells would still move around. Albeit they would have been tight but they still would have been able to move. And the last issue was having to change the battery cable clamps. It wasn't going to be a simple change out and I don't like work arounds. (OK I'm fussy and I like things neat)

Bloody shame Craig, next time :)
to be honest, I would have been asking for a sheet of the packing foam that comes in the battery boxes, cutting that to fit over the top of the battery cells and then applying the clamp over that, As you say though, done now.
