Duck for cover is right :) I have been in a truck on a few occasions and have seen the penile cranium car drivers but there is one big difference and that is size and some of those truck drivers are just down right A holes. I do the same thing with penile cranium car drivers ie take #'s and report them as well so I am not picking on the sweet dear old truckies. :)

I've never reported anyone.... is something wrong with me?
I did have a chap in a 4WD follow me for over 100km with his spot lights on except when a vehicle was coming towards us... I neatly disconnected them with side cutters when he stopped at the same roadhouse as me ....

I hope you cut out a short length of wire so that he couldn't easily join the wire!

Duck duck! This could start one long thread!

We rarely travel over 80 kph when towing. This is our decision based on economy mainly. But Greg drove trucks for years and we always used the UHF to let truck drivers know that we are pulling over and slowing down and in the last few days we've had some good encounters as well as the ones mentioned.

We stopped at a rest stop behind a servo yesterday and there were a couple of truckies talking about the grey nomads, how they are about to hit the road in big numbers, creating a hazard, how they should not be on the roads, and how they have a habit of speeding up when there are places to overtake....now we are wondering why the caravanners do that...or is it an illusion created by the need of the truck driver to speed up with a limiter of 100kph? Just surmising here as I can't see the logic or sense in speeding up when it becomes an overtaking area...

Greg spoke to them and said that we aren't like that, we get on the UHF, we slow when we can sos they can pass, etc., but they wouldn't listen........but we think that just a few caravanners are giving us all a bad name. Truckies also have the same issue....almost ALL the drivers we meet on the road are fine....but there's just a few that are scary with limited vocabulary that give the good truckies a bad name too.

As for speed limits.....they are the limits...not the speed that is mandatory to drive at! If we drove at 100 or 110, and a tyre blows, we are more likely to have a serious accident than if we were doing 80 kph.

Just our three penny's worth...

Dee,

Some car drivers do the speed up all the time when they hit the overtaking lanes. No idea why they have to do this when they are traveling below the speed limit causing others to bank up behind them and as soon as they hit the overtake zone away they go then slow down again at the other end. Others speed up when you are overtaking them just to let you know they aren't happy about being overtaken. Last year the cops actually said they were booking slow drivers and good on them for that, finally. There is an offense under the motor traffic act for, "cause obstruction" that actually is used for this offense of traveling below the speed limit.

I think I know the answer to the speeding up thing on passing lanes - it is a spatial thing. Some people relate their speed to the width of the road based on a lifetime of driving around suburbs where narrow streets are slow streets and wide roads are fast roads. Their brain is programmed that way and out on the highway they drive slower on narrow highways and faster when the highway widens out - usually without knowing what they are doing. Having said that, some drivers just don't want to allow other vehicles to be in front of themselves. Also, there are the self appointed "truck police" who think truck drivers shouldn't travel faster than themselves. Added to that is the fact that many speedometers (BMW and VS especially) that can be 6 to 9 kph over their true speed and the owner doesn't know it.

As for truck drivers always wanting to travel at the speed limit, it must be understood that there are two good reasons for that. Truck drivers are paid by the kilometer, so at 44 cents per kilometer (B-Double casual driver rate a couple of years ago) = $44.00 per hour (hypothetical given that the eventual average speed for a B-Double between cities in Australia is 84 kph and 87 kph for a semi trailer). Now two things can happen; 1. If you slow the driver down by traveling at 80 kph, you reduce his hourly rate by 20%, remembering that a standard truck licence only allows 12 hours driving per day and, therefore, he/she cannot make up the lost income by driving extra hours. Imaging if a public servant or a member of the prima donna unions was made to work more slowly and told that their income would be reduced accordingly. 2. If he/she can only drive at 80% of the permissible speed he/she may not be able to reach a destination within the 12 hours or may not be able to meet a deadline that is otherwise a reasonable deadline.

Not wishing to create an argument here, but pointing out why truck drivers express their feelings the way they sometimes do. The road is their workplace and it is unreasonable for grey nomads to expect truck drivers to drive below the speed limit because said grey nomad prefers to reduce fuel consumption, or is not competent to drive at the speed limit when it is prudent and safe to do so, or is driving a rig that is not set up safely enough to travel at the speed limit when it is prudent to do so. In my opinion it is wise and reasonable to expect grey nomads, and others, to drive at the speed limit for that period of time necessary to get to a point in the road where it is safe for the truck to overtake.

Where is that "duck" smiley.

One really needs to keep their speed up so as not to slow trucks down only slow down when they go out to overtake, good to be in radio contact.

I will be doing no more that 90kph as recommended by the car manufacturer(A framing the Suzuki) so if I hold people no matter who or what they are that will be stiff titty I am aware of others on the roads and I do my best to be as considerate as possible but I will not ruin my car or speed up to assist others impatience. When I was doing my truck lessons the instructor said IF safe to do so pull over to the pull over lane but do NOT stop to let the traffic past I must keep up my own vehicles momentum so that is what I will be doing. As far as I am concerned it is what is in front of me that I must concentrate on but also be aware of what is behind me. Road manners by everyone is the rule.
