Yes Terry, the change to inverter / mains charger for DC DC charging evolved in my case with the smoke escaping from the "Sidewinder" 30 Amp unit I was using. Good Aussie product but made in Hong Kong or Korea from memory. It was just a year old and Sidewinder were not interested at all.

"Peter" might have fallen off the perch it seems, no one has heard from him for a while. "Peter" was not an EE anyway. At one stage I had someone PM me on that forum and told me what his real name was, apparently this person worked with "Peter" and he had some very interesting stories

I contacted Derek Bester at ABR Sidewinder when they introduced their Mk3 unit that was rated for lithium and asked him what improvements they had made to the cooling to stop them from melting down with the continuous high current a lithium battery would put on the unit .... his reply was, "The cooling is the same as the Mk1 and Mk2" ........ he "suggested" that the power supply mode "could" be used as that has current and voltage limiting ....

I do remember Derek being quite disinterested at the time. I thought I could send it back to him and get it repaired, but his comment was that they did not open them up if they failed as they were made in Asia. Mine was about one month out of warranty. In NZ I would have been covered under the consumers guarantees act as "Not Fit For Purpose"
The 50 Amp "Mastervolt" unit I am using now barely gets warm, even after several hours constant use.

Wasn't just that fella that I was thinking of. 🤔
But, I reckon I worked with his son for a while, back in the day.

His (O.... Track123) last post on CF was almost a year ago when he mentioned a myriad of serious health issues including cancer and blood poisoning.

Cheers

He's still above ground, there was some chatter on CF about him.

Technically you are still above ground if your ashes are in a box in a wall somewhere.
