Re: Australian Trivia Only
Got it in one, Shirley!
The story is that the first buildings at Ten Mile Creek appeared in 1836.
In 1840, a German immigrant, John Pabst, took over the Woolpack Hotel.
The town became known as German Town. (Which seems to indicate there was not much more to the town than the pub!
)
The name morphed into Germanton, which was gazetted as a town in 1876.
After the outbreak of WWI, it was deemed an 'unpatriotic' name.
At the time, Lt Norman Holbrook had just been awarded a VC for a successful submarine raid through the minefield at the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) in which he sank a Turkish battleship, then successfully negotiated the minefield to return unharmed.
So the town was renamed Holbrook in his honour.
And that's why there's a full-sized submarine (well, the shell, not including the pressure hull) in the town centre!
Congrats, Shirley!
Your turn...
