T1 Terry wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 7:43 pm Just when you think you've seen all the lack of design Winnebago were capable of, you find yet another clanger .....

Discovered the real reason the bottom Winnie step feels spongy and the old steps felt rather worn .... it wasn't wood rot or worn hinge points, the whole assembly hangs off a piece a folded gal sheet that the bin liners are also made from ..... it has simply fractured at the bend and was just waiting for the opportunity to let the bottom step or the folding steps themselves, come crashing to the ground, along with who ever was standing on it at the time

What started out as looking like a day job, is still compounding it seems .....

I'm sure there will be an end to these repairs .... I'm just wondering if I'll still be above the ground by the time the list is completed .....

Some photos of what was discovered regarding the Winnie step mounting

This is what was left to hold the bottom step and the electric steps
Winnie step mount 3.jpg
This is what was left under the door frame. The screws show the thickness of the piece of pine (I'm guessing) that was originally between the door frame and those pieces of metal that look barely joined together ..... the folded sheet metal wasn't even attached that metal piece .... it just hangs in mid air with zero support
Winnie step mount 2.jpg
A closer look at what was holding the steps up before I cut off the lower section of the door frame
Winnie step mount 8.jpg
As you can see, there was nothing attaching the bottom of the door frame and the fibreglass skin is fracturing both sides
Winnie Ferrari.jpg
This is why there were no screws holding the door frame, there was a 1" gap where I guessing a piece of pine must have been screwed onto the metal frame once

Terry, is that all caused by water damage, or as a result of getting rained on, over the years, when the outer door is/was open?
Ours will obviously have been built using the same construction methods, but I can't check, til it comes back from repairers.

I don't think so. I think the piece of board under the doorframe dissolved first, allowing water to be drawn up under the doorframe. Water entry around the doorframe supplied some of the water, the rest came up from under the Winnie when travelling in the rain because the support wasn't there to hold the assembly up snug and water tight.
It looks like the step/box that makes up the next step, is new folded gal sheet, possibly added recently to repair that section, the gal looks new and shiny while the timber bits are clearly old and suffering water damage.

It's all rebuildable, the question in the back of my mind, if they did this sort of work here, what am I going to find else where .... The problems with the fibreglass skin coming away around the vent at the back of the fridge and around the water heater outer cover shows the timber behind it is rotted ..... but how far will that go?

It needs to be our house and home for the next 2 yrs, so I'll keep at it and maybe I can turn it around and make it into what it should have been .....

Every so often I think, what would I do if I didn't know how to fix the problems ..... then I think back to when I bought it, if I wasn't confident I could fix it, I wouldn't have bought it .....

Terry, good news.

Nigel messaged me from holidays.

As a special favour to help sort out the dampness; he's going to help dry the place out.
45 tomorrow, then 40 and 40.

He said to get on with it and seal it all up when there is not moisture left.
How's that for looking after you.... Pretty cool huh?

But, seriously. Be careful, it's going to be a stinker in Mannum tomorrow.

Not quite sure how I'll handle tomorrow, probably camp out in the MG4 all day with the air con running. I'd imagine we will see 50* here on the concrete slab with no protection from the sun. Margaret and Brian have doctor's appointments in Murray Bridge, so I guess they'll camp out in the shopping centre and the underground car park with the two dogs .....

Today was bad enough, had the big fan with the water spray under the awning and attempted to get something done on the step reconstruction .... yeah nah, no hope, so I had a cold .... well, as cold as the cold water was, shower and flaked out under the air con on the bed ..... Still around 34*C @ 8pm

Have you got the shipping containers in position yet and when do you think the cover will go up? We hit 39.6 outside today.Birds enjoyed their misting fan.

Shipping containers are in place, no start on putting the dome up yet .... either too hot or too windy. Working on getting the Winnie steps sorted, absolutely shameful construction.
Discovered tonight, the same tin sheet that held the steps up, also holds the fibreglass body section on with 2 x self-tapping screws through the tin each side. The tin sheet is held up by 90* bend over the floor and the gold coloured trim around the steps, held in place with tiny nails, also holds to tin to the floor.

Got a bit done between 8:30 and 10pm, then the wind dropped and the mozzies arrived :o
