Thunderbolt Way is actually a better trip when driving south as you continually get great views looking over the Hunter Valley & of cause you're coming down the big hills.
The Coaster has no problem climbing the hills when traveling north.
We came home that way last year in August & there was a lot of roadworks underway.

Thunderbolts way has nothing on the drive from Omeo to Tallangatta. I did it on Sunday and I'm extremely grateful for power steering in the Bedford, even so, I felt like I had had a 4 hour gym workout at the end of it.
