You don't need to pay for both. Take the tag out of the toad and put in a "special" bag. The tag people have the bags for if you have a second tag in a vehicle for any reason. Someone on this forum will no doubt tell you what other type of material you can wrap the tag in to prevent it being read.

When the Barina threw a timing belt on the Newcastle expressway we returned with a trailer to collect it. forgot about the tag still being in the Barina so we got a double bill, a second appart. we rang the toll mob and explained what happened, the cancelled the second tag charge. roam have been very good with any problems, they are easy to get along with.

We've had a Govia QLD account for a few years now, no deposit for the tags, no monthly fees and it only tops up to $25 when balance drops. We live in NSW and currently have four tags on the one account.
I have emailed and asked for and received several replacement windscreen mounts at no charge as well as a "special" one for trucks which places the tag at a different angle in the Oka.
Changing vehicle and plate details is easily done online as is requesting additional or replacement tags.
The tags work in all states.

We have Victorian e-Tags for the M/h & toad.
Toad is a normal car tag; m/h is "Commercial Vehicle" as there is no such thing in Vic as a privately owned vehicle over 4.5t (according to them).
We top-up a/c manually, as I have a THING about authorising businesses to deduct $$$ from my a/c as they see fit.
In the early days of the Sydney bypass, I spent 20 minutes on phone (using bluetooth earpiece) to pay for using M7, after our Vic unit failed to beep at appropriate time. We were off the M7 before we'd sorted things!
(Works better these days.)
Might have to investigate the Qld system...

BTW, when toad is on the rear, we just put the e-Tag in its glovebox. No probs.
Regards & God bless,

My daughter used to do that so no one would pinch it when she borrowed mine. Then cracked it when the bill arrived.

Hi Everyone. We live in SA so all this tag - toll stuff is foreign to us. Am I right in assuming that by having this tag thing, you can just drive through the toll gates on the highways without having to pay and you get sent an account of what you owe each month? You would need to keep a close check on how many times you went through the tolls I suppose - easier said than done . Am I right in thinking that if we were to travel over there for a holiday, then we would just need to stop at the gates and pay the toll (or use the GPS to avoid them altogether  )

No place to pay any more in Qld, you must have a tag or pay within 3 days.
You MUST give them a credit card and agree on a deductible amount (usually 25 bucks for light users) and they take out as necessary.
Online statements available of course.
Pretty simple system really
Most people travelling in 3 major eastern states would have one, I would reckon.

G'day,

Most Toll systems have you open an account with them using a credit card & pay in a nominal amount, ours is $50, & when it drops to around $15 they do an automatic top up from your credit card.

They supply an e-tag to stick on the inside of you windscreen - one for each vehicle nominated - normally behind the rear view mirror so it's out of the way - & after that you can drive along any toll road in the country without having to stop.

Just make sure that as you go under each 'gantry' over the road that your e-tag beeps, then you know that it has registered & the toll amount has been paid.

We get a monthly update via email showing which vehicles have travelled on which sections of toll road & the times they did so... that way you can keep a check on your account.

All too easy really.

Once you have a tag and have your vehicles listed, if you drive thru a toll gate but don't have the tag in the vehicle it still registers the rego no and applies it to your tag and bill.

I'm like you Aussiegirl. Up until now I just avoid them.
Recently thought about going over Gippsland way but when I looked at the roads to avoid the toll roads I noticed a size limit. (Beach Rd?)
I just have to wonder why it's even needed when 65% (est) of the price of fuel is going to the various Gov's.
Then there's all the duties & fees on drivers licenses, vehicle regos etc etc.
Guess someone needs to pay for elected officials holidays overseas & super!!
