Our low rates of accidents and crime could be down to low population as our roads are pretty crap compared to Aus roads, our cars are much older and we do have an older age demographic I believe. You could also include a more laid back life style because we aren't struggling for space with thousands of others, can park a car in the middle of Hobart with no problems and the cops are pretty hard on P platers and hoons. You can walk onto most beaches round Tas and not a soul anywhere most of the year, drive from home to almost Hobart and not come across a car and the same coming home, which makes for a calmer drive. Although during the summer season it's very different, but most locals like me avoid driving after 0900 over xmas as it can be bedlam and that's when we get the majority of our accidents. When we had thousands of chinese coming here, we had lots of accidents because they are stupid in the extreme, now they don't come and it's only the corporations that complain about our lowering tourist rates, but not the people we celebrate that bonus.
I stick with vehicles from the early 90's because of the computerisation, it's a pity no one has build a low cost simple long range EV without all the computerisation and corporate control. But as we live in a corporate controlled world, not going to happen, just more costs to the people and more profit growth for corporations and dumber politicians.

You can build your own EV NP, there are at least two sites that work with each other, to build replacement control boards for proprietary inverters to be able to program it yourself, no back to the manufacturer connection. It is a popular hobby type thing, across the world, to convert older vehicles to electric ... if you are interested, I can link a few interesting builds, one in Australia and a yank one, but he is interesting in his approach, and one from the UK, who is one of the board developers, talks real slow so it does take time to get there, but incredible in what he has achieved
