Helicopter tour of Carnarvan Gorge, excellent. Dinner supplied by local progress association.
Tomorrow off to Springsure, some will call into "Rainworth Fort", built after the Mills family Massacre back in the 1800's.

Yes we have the warm gear with us, and Mack has a warm coat, so we are off to brave the cold weather, will be down south till the new year now. Once inside we are nice and warm, we have had good weather while in Sydney, but have had to stay at a caravan park while here, as they don't seem to let you stay in showgrounds down here.

Drove from Isisfore to Ilfracombe today [only 25k out of Longreach staying at the football club. Just used their BBQ to cook dinner [2nd meal I've cooked since leaving Kurrajong]. Spent the morning at "The Stockmans Hall of Fame, lunch at the Outback Bar & Grill. Then across the road to Qantas Museum and tour of the 747 and 707. Very interesting. Two Army helicopters took off [only young crew 20/25] they put on a display [showing off] for us.

So what did you think of the Stockman's Hall of fame? Value for money or??? I did enjoy the Qantas display and watching the movie of them landing that 747 on such a small landing strip. Lots of interesting displays as well, enjoyed reading about the early passenger services, it would have been very much a rich man's folly back then.

Peter,
When we did the 747 tour, the guide told us there was a queue of pilots wanting to do the final flight when Qantas announced the retirement of Jumbo #1. They all had to practice on a simulator, and even the pilot who got the job "crashed" the simulator 3 times before perfecting the technique.
They had to shut down the two outboard engines, as the runway was too narrow, and they would suck up dust & gravel - potential fire hazard & creaming of engine internals (which were later removed & used for spares). Only the front fans were left in place for appearance. ;)
The landing also required such hard braking (short strip) that the pads are now welded to the discs!
A great and informative tour, nevertheless. Never been in a 747's 1st Class cabin before... 8-)
Regards & God bless,
Ray
