From what I've heard and been told some tour organisers in Europe recommend that the travellers camp close to the locals for security reasons.
Can't back that up with anything other than a couple of comments I've had from backpackers.
Security at bush camps is not a big issue here in Oz.

Well for the most part the rif raf stay in the city's. But with that said places like https://www.google.com/search?q=quartzs ... FOSYZpM%3A have BIG issues with theft. I have had no issues with security boondocking. Your MORE
likely to run into people with guns boondocking. (Higher risk for rif raf to get shot) Can not speak for Europe though.
