I was diverted by the cops because the Hume Highway was cut by floodwaters.
Every time I came to an intersection where I wanted to turn north there was a copper redirecting traffic to the west.
Ended up driving through about 20 miles of axle-deep water despite copper's warning.
Got to Ncle with a rumbling noise coming from the rear at anything over 40mph.
Dad crawled under & found the water had washed all the grease out of my rear universal, & it was barely hanging together. Lucky he was a mechanic! All fixed next day with a new universal & a warning NOT to drive through floodwaters of ANY depth on my return to Melbourne.
Amazing that I didn't encounter a serious wash-away along the way!
We do some stupid things when we're young, eh?
