Bugger!! Does it have air brakes? Any oil in the air tank?
Dropping the exhaust manifold might tell you which cylinder it is if it's rings.

Hmmm..... that will explain why I haven't had any phone calls for a while  My guess is the dribbling injectors had already washed the bore and now a piston has grabbed and scoured the bore. How far had you travelled before it started to use oil? Does it huff smoke out of the engine breather pipe under load? That is a sign of a damaged bore. Does it blow smoke when restarted hot or cold? That is a sign of worn valve guides and often it's the oil leaking down the guides sealing the rings enough for the engine to start, just doing the valve guides results in a no start engine. When the piston grabbed in the Mazda, the only way I could keep oil in it was to keep the revs low but not labour the engine, so always a gear lower than required and light throttle. It came home from Taggerty like that, then a dash to Brisbane and back before I stripped it down and fitted new pistons, liners, rings and brgs. I'll see if I can find the place I bought the parts from, I was surprised just how cheap they were but I can't remember just how much that was, either under $1,000 or under $2,000, but cheap for diesel eng parts anyway.
Found it http://www.engineaustralia.com.au/about ... ower-parts did it all on the net, they sent the info required to identify the engine as it was not the Mazda's original engine, paid on line and the parts arrived a few days later.

Hi folks we have arrived home pissed down rain for the first 170Ks,(435k total to home) I added another 2 1/2 Lts at Kingaroy haven't checked since arriving home.
Terry there is no smoke coming from the breather pipe so the boss said as she followed me all the way. It blows smoke any time you put your foot on the go peddle . Starting the engine is almost to quick, as you touch the key it fires probably not even one revolution ?
More when I know more.
It seemed to use the same amount with or with out the car attached.

When it's tad drier, check out under the bus from where the eng breather pipe exits down the side of the engine back under the bus, if it's all covered in oil it is spraying the oil out, not burning it, this was what the Mazda was doing. If there is also a breather pipe off the tappet cover going into the air intake, disconnect it and look for oil in the hose and inside the air intake. This is the leading cause of diesel run away, it starts to eat its own engine oil using it as fuel, revs uncontrolled till it seizes. Some amazing You Tube clips on this problem that seems to occur quite often throughout Europe where diesel engine cars are very popular.

That is exactly what happened to the son's 4 runner a few years ago he had to stall it to stop it, the engine just revved out.

Good that you arrived home without any major breakdown Bernie.
