Ah the Renault Daphine. Can't remember how to spell it was so long ago. Did you know you can fit 5 teenagers into one with 5 surfboards (real ones, malibus) on the roof. Did you know you can get the removal and replacement of an engine down to less than an hour if you do it often enough ? Yes you can, plenty of practice if you do the above.
Ford Zephys, Simcas, Datsuns, a 46 dodge ute busbasher.
then I got old enough to get a special licence to drive to work at Byron Bay.
3 weeks later I got done for speeding, bald tyres, no overtaking signals.
Mum answered the phone but I could hear the local cop who had ok'd the licence yelling, "bring that bastard son of yours over here, NOW"
Got quite a talking to. !!
Started counting recently, got to about 46 cars and kept remembering others so gave it away.
One I owned for 10 minutes and doubled my money on. A TR 2. probably a good one to get out of !
So, dunno how many all up, but been a lot, and a lot of fun.
Lifes good, then you die ?
Made some good Verdhelo yesterday, some sort of compensation.

My 1st car was a 1955 Austin A30 which , initially, I regularly replaced the big end bearings until I came across a brand new Morris 1100 motor which I converted to north-south and connected it to a Morris Minor 1000 remote shift gearbox. A friend who had an MGA was upset that I could keep up with and overtake him. The car that I consider to be my best and most enjoyable car was a 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super (purchased new), the performance and handling were outstanding until another driver wrapped his Monaro completely around the front end in February of 1972 causing many weeks in hospital for myself and my wife.

Makes my Ford Angela 193? model soft top look good. Had to carry a spare axle as it broke one nearly every week. Then advanced to a 1938 Buick straight eight and had to carry sleeves to put in the tyres every puncture, seven between Merrylands NSW and Narooma NSW.

No different to when ICE vehicles came along, there were no fuel stations and very few paved roads and those problems are being overcome. There are already EV's with solar cells in their roof, the Rivian SUV has a range of over 800klms. When travelling the tanami or any outback track, you need to carry extra fuel, or you're to stupid for words. Hook a trailer behind and EV and you can carry an extra pack, with panels on the roof of the trailer to recharge on the road.Greynomad wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2020 10:32 pm I’m waiting for the Hybrid Jimny...
Full electric probably not feasible for scrub-bashing. Can’t just plug into the nearest tree to recharge.
Full electric would put an end to excursions up the Tanami Track & the other real outback tracks. Can’t really see anyone installing a Tesla recharge station at Well 41.
Rooftop solars anyone??![]()
An Aus uni is developing quantum dot solar cells, which are much more efficient than silicone cells and its won't be long before the net generation of lithium cells comes along. Add regen braking used properly and the problems are only in your head.
My friend who has a kona ev, has refined their driving so they can go over 500klms easily. Add capacitor storage for regen braking and you can capture it all, then you'll be able to go even further. Having driven in and driven a kona, can't wait to get and Ev the experience is so cool and exhilarating, may even sell some of my stuff to get one.
But, this year will see the release of many more advanced evs than the tesla, with more efficient motors and better regen capture. The future looks good to me, if we don't wreck the planet before we get to enjoy real ev freedom.

Re: Electric car lovers...
A way to go before anyone develops a motor more efficient than the Tesla motors, but they are getting better. As far as the regen, modern large capacity battery packs have a capacity for very high regen current, 40kWh x 5CA current acceptance rate is 200kW of instant regen, no way you could get enough traction to handle that much regen and the ride comfort would be severely compromised
It would be like the Ludicrous mode acceleration in the Tesla 4D but in reverse, you'd need forward mounted headrests.
The 10kWh PHEV battery in the Prius recharges from empty in a day while we are at work from the solar on the roof of the Hino, so a complete recharge to travel another 400km plus would take 4 days camped up, but 100km and a day camped up and then another 100km would see you doing the outback trip for zero fuel costs, hard to beat that eh

Saw on the news tonight about the tesla? car that turned it's security camera on as a woman was having a great time keying all down the side of the car.

It makes you wonder why people do senseless shit like that. There is nothing worse than coming back to your car to find that some mental midget has keyed it. Still pissed me off when I think about it. The wonders of technology ehh? I hope the caught and prosecuted the person responsible.

Cheers
