Since leaving Lara Wetlands, we’ve travelled quite a few kms. Our next stop was Muttaburra at the council owned Caravan Park. $15 per night for two nights then you can stay an additional 3 nights free. This includes power, water, showers, loos and dump point. There are about 16 sites and it was full every night we were there.

There are a couple of free camps close to town and also a number of camping spots along the Broadwater, a water course that is part of the Thomson River system. We drove out there for a look and found a number of good spots if one was a fisher person.

There are lots of sculptures dotted around town which we explored armed with a map from the visitor centre. The Muttaburrasaurus centre was a fascinating building constructed entirely of rocks stacked within wire cages.

Every Thursday evening during the tourist season, the community puts on a camp fire cookup which the campers are encouraged to participate in. This happened to coincide with my birthday and we had a great evening with the locals and some of our fellow CP campers.

From Muttaburra, we drove back to Aramac and then north to Lake Dunn where we camped for the princely sum of $10 per night right beside the water. Power and water is available for $15per night and there are shower, toilets and a dump point plus a water fill for those who need to top up. Fees are collected by 92 year old Marge, who buzzes around on her golf cart each afternoon.

From this base we travelled the sculpture trail in the Suzi, approximately 150kms of gravel and 67km bitumen back to the lake. We did manage to get a flat tyre on the Suzi but all was well in the end. There are around 40 different sculptures on the trail so I will just post a couple of photos to whet your appetite.

Sorry, difficult to limit my favourites.

Leaving Lake Dunn, we headed back to Aramac and down to Barcaldine where we got a new tyre for the Suzi, filled a gas bottle, stocked up with a few groceries and wine and enjoyed a pulled pork burger for lunch. Onwards to Redbank Park in Jericho which was rather packed but we found a level spot that suited and spent a quiet night.

Next stop Emerald.
Cheers

Please consider placing the photos on the Forum Photo Gallery.
They are too good to loose in the general item postings, and should be saved for prosperity in the forum photo gallery
Just a suggestion for your consideration.

Trying again after I lost a long post. ☹️

Previously we had only stopped in Emerald to refuel and buy groceries but this trip is about exploring those towns we have ignored in the past. So we set ourselves up in the unpowered section of Emerald Tourist Park for the princely sum of $14.40 per night after CMCA discount. We had access to all the amenities and a water fill point plus nightly free entertainment around the communal campfire.

New owners took over what had been a very ordinary park a few years ago and are doing a great job of improving the place.

Freshly cooked seafood is available Mon-Sat from the onsite Yabby Trap. The $20 Pensioner Pack comprised of 4 smallish pieces of fish, 8 pieces of calamari and more than enough chips for two, tartare sauce a lemon. It was very tasty.

We called in at the Visitor Centre and collected a couple brochures about the mosaic history trail set out in the park behind the centre and also the sculptures to be found in the town centre.

A few of my favourite mosaics.

My favourite of the town sculptures was The Overflow depicting the overflow at Fairbairn Dam.

We spent 3 enjoyable nights in Emerald and socialised with friends from home who were also camped there.

From Emerald, we turned north driving through Capella and Clermont as we intend to revisit them on the return trip. We stopped at the Belyando Crossing Roadhouse which seems to be closed to casual camping with much of the space being taken up by miners’ dongas. A few kms north we found a cleared area just off the highway where we spent a reasonably quiet night.

Charters Towers was our next target and we were very happy with our choice of the Dalrymple Caravan Park which adjoined the golf course. There are some beautifully maintained old buildings in town and once again the Visitor Centre helped us out with things to see.

Wow, does my jealousy look big in this post? Great photos and certainly has stirred up my wanting to do some travelling again. Thank you both for sharing, love the barbed wire koala in the tree and the bird building the nest ..... inspiration, that no doubt will just remain that and never make it to reality

Towers Hill is a very interesting site to visit in Charters Towers.

Some of the concrete bunkers used in WWII have interactive displays showing how strategically important the RAAF presence was in the town.

Leaving Charters Towers we decided to make a side trip to the small town of Ravenswood which was said to have a couple of lovely old hotels. We camped at the Showgrounds for 3 nights and explored the local sights.
