Hino Rb145A power steering

Hi .....This is probably a question for T1 ............The power steering reservoir is pressurising and pushing out the fluid .
First sign of problem was clattering noise from steering pump ....due to air i believe.....steering wheel vibrating in sympathy.
I have inspected the pressure relief valve and all looks good and drained most of the fluid and replaced with fresh .
Since i have done this the system is still pressurising the reservoir but there is no power assistance . Have to bleed it some how i think , but am at a lost as to how air can get in . Tomorrow i will pull the flexible hoses and inspect....this event happened suddenly ....there was no prior warning of issues.

1. Possibly sucking air in on the low pressure side of the pump - Look for loose hose clamp, fluid restriction, wet spot when not running, torn oil seal on the pump.

2. Not enough fluid in the system and just needs topping up.


3. Jack up the front axle, with the engine idling, rotate the steering wheel slowly from side to side; and top up the tank.

4. Hoses on the tank are swapped over and the fluid is not drawing through the filter properly. (should be up the center and pushed through the filter)

Thanks Bruce and Jon ........I have inspected all the hoses and pipes ,, no sign of leaks etc ......is a gear drive pump so can not see if the shaft seal is leaking .....will pull the pump when i can get time to it ....

It's a Nice looking rig going by the atavar pic.
You can get joy just looking at it ( has it got a name) so no need to drive it and use the power steering.

Also saves on diesel that way. I'm sure that you have a video player in the unit, so you could just sit inside and watch a travel video CD disc thing. You can get the CD's from the library for free. That way you save on tyres so; win/win all ways.

I am full of suggestions since I have been taking these pills. Stay tuned for more ramble sessions after the next pill parade.

Thanks Keith ....all that is true......very economical to run at the moment .....I am pleased to see that you are home and having fun again...My wife has named it 'Hilda' ..... I have a few other names for it ....she has been a bitch so far .....needed a new head (very hard to find ) got a used one from china at great expense...motor seems good now ......difficulties with roadworthy...now power steering ..gees.


This morning have looked around the power steering again went thru the bleeding operation as per the manual ...but still not working so i think Bruce is on the money ....seems to me the fluid is getting contaminated with engine oil and that means to me likely seal failure.

The power steering on my cruiser was playing up, decided to rebuild it, but found could get a new one for less money than the parts. Put it on with the engine rebuild, be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes to the steering as it now has a new steering box in it as well.

Hope fully only need seal/bearing 'O' rings etc
