Re: Double Lines
Shirley, if I was you, I wouldn't be prepared to risk driving over those double lines. Maybe 9 times out of 10 you might get away with it. What's the fine worth in NSW now?
Cheers

Re: Double Lines
Shirley, the best idea is to ask the people who fine you or shoot you, (depending on where you live of course). The policeman is your friend, I was told at school. Consensus is not the way the law operates. Just the facts ma'am, only the facts! Perhaps a traffic cop would have the rules at his fingertips, so no guessing involved. bk

Re: Double Lines
Crossing double lines has been considered a serious offence for at least 70 years in order to save lives which was the sole reason they exist. In recent times a very powerful bike lobby has convinced politicians to change the law relating to double lines and the law which I think now exists throughout Australia that it is ok to cross them if there is a push bike in front of you.
In the interests of road safety and our own safety we should NEVER cross double lines. The politicians have a lot to answer for in their decision making on this issue. Just after votes. I was a police officer for 35 years and attended many accidents where drivers had crossed over double lines.
Another issue for me is speed cameras. They are only revenue raisers. They do not stop a motorist from speeding. A month later the offender receives a fine in the mail. The person speeding still continues along their merry way speeding and endangering the public. I have been retired 15 years however whilst still working every police office in a speed camera van was granted 4 hours overtime every time the van drove out of the station. However there was no overtime to attend or investigate a break and enter . Just revenue for money hungry governments to spend. Speeding is a serious matter and the best remedy is for a police officer to stop and have a chat with the offender.

Re: Double Lines
In Tasmania, you can cross double lines for avoiding an obstacle, bike, or a slow moving vehicle, like a tractor etc and there is no risk of a collision.
