Peter, is it a Kwikee Step? They are wired a bit weird and have an internal overtoque setting, so if you open it against a gutter or something, it stops instead of jamming. Our motor failed a few years back and I had to replace it.
Is the step out or in at the moment?
Cheers

I don't know the brand but it is a steel framed step with the yellow sand paper glued to it and the step is in. Not long after we got the motorhome the step would not go in and it was a fuse in the truck cabin. Age prevents me from remembering which fuse it was but the fuses test ok so the relay theory sounds good , but there again so does a few beers.

Peter, does the actual switch have a hidden battery? I realise that the motor homes are a different build to our caravan, but we have had to replace batteries inside the actual switches for lights a few times and have had to totally replace the whole switching unit for one of our lights (it had been wired very wrongly and kept using all the energy in the battery in a day). Jayco were useless for the dead light switch. It was a couple of sparkies in our jayco club that finally found the weird wiring issue.
Hope you find the solution fairly easily. Nothing more frustrating.

No hidden batteries in this motor home, it's all hard wired and none of the recent modern control systems. We hope we find
the issue soon as it is frustrating ,especially when we forget the step is not out and the muscles in the legs and back get stretched and almost landing on our bums getting out   What ever the problem is , it will be a simple thing.

Thanks George for the suggestion, we have a caravan step and will use it, just hope I don't drive away and leave it behind again. :D

Loop a rope around one of the legs and tie it to the motorhome .... sort of an audible warning you left the step out ;) We have left a number of those ALDI exercise steps around various parts of the country, they are never there when we return so someone must have had a use for them ....

That means there must be a switching relay that is energised to the close step position from the ignition on wiring. Chances are that relay has failed so the step stays permanently closed.
Wait till Taggerty and :
A) Someone will be willing to get under there and check it for you
B) we can organise a team to dig a pit under the step area so you can slide under and check it out
C) There will be a heap of advice on what the problem could be while seated around the campfire. The more firewater consumed the wilder the possibilities will be

The bookies are open taking bets on A, B or C being the most likely scenario, C is currently an odds on favourite
