DD starting

Post by Busman »

Plan on doing a bit of travelling later this year.
VP has sat in her shed for the last year, ever since an over the pits inspection. Not started in that time.
Got another inspection next week so thought I had better start the old girl up.
Not 1/4 of a turn after key turn and was running sweet as a nut.
Amazingly tough these old Detroits. If had been a modern one probably would have half a dozen failed sensors !
Vanishing Point, almost ready to vanish
Suzuki GV more than ready to go NOW !

The same with the Hino engine .... the unburnt fuel smoke is another matter  Gotta sort out that timer for the glow plugs ..... sometimes it starts as clean as a whistle, other time not quite so smoke free

Small capacity antiquated pre combustion chamber diesel engines  The direct injection engines usually have a heater of some sort in the intake path. the Volvo's had an electric element in the start of the intake manifold, it that wasn't there or was broken, couldn't see for blocks until it warmed up. Emptied a 12 truck workshop one morning just trying to get the thing outside.
The old pomie diesels had a glow plug and diesel cyl above it and it would start a fire in the intake manifold as the engine was cranked over  They were a real shitte if the battery was a bit poorly and someone wasn't clued up about the direction the aircleaner pipe had to go .... the burning diesel would run down the intake and set the paper element on fire :o A lot of these were disconnected for this reason, but if there was ice on the ground, a piece of welding wire tied around a rag and dipped into the diesel tank, then held above the air intake (with the air cleaner hose disconnected) and set on fire, crank it over and let it suck the fire into the engine .... had to be careful or when it started it would claim the rag and all

Found the wiring that went with the warm up switch on the dash and connected it up down the back where the glow plug solenoid lives, much less smoke on a cold start up now 8-) Just need to be a tad more careful when I put the crank handle away in that locker now after accidentally knocking the wire off that supplies all the power up front to drive the battery isolator switch. Had Jon D testing wiring all over the place when it wouldn't switch anything on after tying the car onto the trailer at Taggerty, seems when I was putting the jack etc away I knocked the wire off a fuse box I didn't know was there

We were following a Hino out of the Taggerty campsite and lost site of it in a cloud of smoke for about five minutes. Almost called the fire brigade to report a bush fire..
