We had private health insurance… until my cancer diagnosis.
We asked the admissions clerk what the difference would be in cost & care between private & public treatment.
Answer:
Same care, but with private health insurance you pay for all prescription medications
(I had lots, and some were $thousands/mth) as well as the Drs & get part of the money back for Drs. Prescriptions were full price unless you had a pension card. Also, some treatments were free to public patients, but not covered at all by health insurance.
We went public.
Over 22 years of treatment I was never put on a waiting list for any treatment or specialist appointment, and I have no complaints about the care. We also didn't have to worry about Drs bills.
Fellow patient was on private insurance. His wife was constantly worrying about paying medical bills, and several times paid twice. (No refund, just a credit on the next bill!
