RCD on 240v input on Sprinter van.

Post by Kappy »

Hi all, been awhile, had to head home October last year, My place got burgled and Covid upset my plans.

In the process of re evaluating my mode of transport.

Gonna use my Sprinter van, that I've owned for a few years.

The sprinter is fitted with 240v input, ( installed by sparky) some time ago.

Earlier this year I disconnected the RCD on the 240 input, to do some other cosmetic work.

Putting back together and can't recall where the earth wire on the input to RCD is meant to go as there is only 2 spots on the RCD.

Any guidance appreciated.

Cheers

David will be along shortly to advise but in most switchboards the earth usually bypasses any circuit breaker.
Years ago only the active was switched but now active & neutral seem to always be switched. (just my comments)
Good to see you back & up & at it!! ;) :P

Thanks Bruce. I have been fluffing about trying to copy correct info from the net.

It shows that the incoming earth and all your circuit earth's are connected together. But you need to be aware that most RCD's won't operate correctly if you are using a generator or stand alone solar setup. But they do work perfectly when connected to mains power. What most people are using now is an RVD which will operate correctly under all scenarios.
rvdsafe.com.au is the website. There are a couple of different types depending on your situation. Cost around $200.
I'm pretty sure that T1 uses RVD's in all his work now.
Hope this helps.

Thanks David, Don't plan to run via Gennie, only to connect to Mains.
Although I will look at RVD's.

They didn't catch the pricks that did it, but nailed a couple that ended with my firearms.

Heading east around Xmas, may do a house sit in Mannum.
Cheers.

The RVD that also senses the active/neutral being reversed is the ideal choice to replace any RCD in a mobile premises (boat, caravan, campervan, motorhome, container house etc) Contact Ian at RVD-safe (AKA powerstream on the caravanner forum) certainly not cheap, but it only has to save a serious electrical shock to more than pay for itself. Most of the more expensive PSW inverters have built in earth/neutral switching these days, but the cheaper ones do not and will not trigger an RCD in the case of a wiring fault .... electric shocks don't just kill, there is the case of an apprentice who coped a server shock because his boss just turned the system without properly checking everything. The apprentice grabbed the gas pipe to help climb out and fried his brains ..... lived but ........ that could never have happened with an RVD installed instead of an RCD, voltage would have been sensed where there should be no voltage (the earth circuit) and cut the supply instantly
