Fuel tank diagram for Toyoto Landcruiser 1987

Post by homeless »

I am working ion a Toyota Landcruiser 1987 model where it wont run on petrol but Ok on gas.

The vehicle is not registered for road use as it is a farm ute.

I have traced the fuel lines back to the tank and are all Ok till it gets to the solid pipes into the tank. There are two pipes and both appeared to be blocked as I cant pass a wire down to fuel and I cant blow air through the line to the tank even with a compressor.

I am looking for a diagram of this tank to see if there is some sort of fitting on the end of these pipes or has someone put something in the tank to block the pipes. eg cement etc.

I cant find a manual for this vehicle, plenty on the chassis etc but nothing that would cover the fuel tank or would this be covered in the chassis manual.

Regards

Brian it may have a strainer and a non-return valve on the pickup pipe but should be open on the return one.
Probably hard to do but try pressure in the filling hole with the pipes disconnected anywhere upstream from there.
T1 would know more than me but surely there would be a soleniod to shut off fuel when on gas? Maybe that solenoid is faulty or no power getting to it?

If the pickup is not through a removeable plate there is no filter screen on the end. The fuel cut off solenoid is up in the engine compartment so that's not the problem. I'd go with laquer or a lot of sugar or possibly mallases that has melted in the petrol and heat, then set on the bottom of the tank, I doubt the cement would set in petrol. I'm thinking the tank or at least the pick up pipe if it's removeable will need to come out. Maybe a quicker fix would be a 60ltr drum on the tray with the pick up pipe and return and the breather with a walking stick bend on the top soldered in the small bung and the large bung for the filler.

The pipes are solid in the tank. It is not the solenoid as I am putting the compressor fitting at the pipe right out of the tank so nothing in between except for the solid pipe sweated into the tank.

I have the pressure of the compressor that high that the short hose I am using for a connection between the compressor nozzle and the tank the hose is swelling and then blows off, so there is a lot of pressure and resistance there.

Me thinks the tank on the tray or a new tank is in order.

Thanks guys I will give him the good news as he bought the ute and has never tried petrol but he cant drive it down the road to get gas.

Might have to look at getting a hose made to put :LPG into the tank, but I think it is a lot more expensive but more eles the same gas right ?????

You can get a syphon hose to decant a caravan bottle into the gas tank filler. The 9kg caravan bottle holds 18ltrs, if you turn the bottle upside down and put it in the sun with the hose connected, you will be able to feel on the caravan bottle where the liquid level has drained to, a definite cold line. it is unlikely you will get all the caravan bottle in on the first try, the pressure equalises between the 2 and no more will flow, if the bottle gets a lot warmer than the tank, the pressure differewnce will force more in.
This is actually legal to do and the hose and filling are available from more vehicle gas fitters suppliers, quite a few in the Melbourne area.
Maybe he can get a forklift gas craddle and swap out gas bottles that way, instead of filling the gas tank, there is likely to be a gas mob that will supply forklift gas bottles, it would be a lot cheaper in the long run.
