Ray, are you nipping off the ends of the runners when they start to flower?
I have never set out to grow pumpkins, the just have just grown from compost.
Thanks Vic, hadn't heard that.
Jon, no thanks. Not if they are going to produce it again.

Back in the Illawarra, the pumpkin grew through the fence and the neighbour used a womens make-up brush to tickle the flowers and pollinate them, produced one real big pumpkin .... we didn't get any to grow beyond mini squash size.

David,
Never had to trim pumpkin vines. Had one arrive in the soil of a potted rose many moons ago…
Rose came up really well, as did the pumpkin vine.
We harvested 15 decent sized pumpkins and didn’t have to buy one for about 12 months!
Now, when we want to grow them, the pumpkin vines won’t cooperate!

Ray, my dad was an excellent gardener, he always said that they won't put any effort into growing while the vine was still getting bigger. He used to always nip out the buds at the extremes of the vines. Always worked for him..
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Tomato sauce, Relish, etc
Correction from the Head Gardener:
They were not Qld Greys but Japs & Butternuts.
She says the Butternuts did survive & mingled with the Jap vines.
We had lots of flowers, but 99% were male flowers. The few females were not fertilised, and the bulbs didn’t mature into pumpkins.
I stand corrected… while sitting down.

… and we still didn’t get any pumpkins.

Re: Tomato sauce, Relish, etc
The next ones that grow, I'll have to try the duster brush and nipping the ends off and see if I get any better results.supersparky wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 8:06 pm Ray, my dad was an excellent gardener, he always said that they won't put any effort into growing while the vine was still getting bigger.
