We have 2 lads today eldest & youngest, Jacob has gone to an indoor skate park at Cardiff with Mum & Ollie has gone to work with Dad, back to school next week.

So I shut off my alarm and stayed under the blanket until 0830!
By then it was 0* outside.
SWMBO returns today.
That means I have to clean & tidy up before she arrives.

The bottom bolts of the flange are under the oil line. They must be sealed will flange sealant.

The oil seal runs on the uni/flange shaft. You could fit a speedi sleeve. However, as Terry has said, once you remove it, the rice paper gaskets make the critical distance to set the backlash. It has to be exactly the same prior to removal.

The flange nut is tightened to 245? ft lbs or something. This sets the bearing preload and stops the oil running up the pinion spline. (as also said by Terry and outlined in the document I sent previously.)

Adrian has crown wheel and pinions for about $900. And rice paper gaskets too.

My pinion.... don't be fooled, it's about 16 inches long.

On the later model Bedford diff assembly, that gasket behind the flange seal is a big wad of gasket with close to the same thickness shims behind the inner pinion bearing cup. The problem is the housings are machined wrong, so the pinion has to be spaced out by that amount. Those who don't understand Bedford technology often remove the shims and thick gasket and assemble using sealant on the flange. All well and good to set the backlash properly, the problem is the upper section of the pinion gear doesn't fully mesh with the crown wheel teeth resulting in uneven strain across the pinion bearing and abnormal wear on the crown wheel, the end result is a stuffed diff assembly ...... That spacing is critical and can only be set correctly using bearing blue and driving the crown wheel via the pinion, the pinion is installed without the seal and the nut is tightened to achieve the required bearing preload using a lb scale string measure, then the crown wheel is installed to do the next stage .... if the pinion depth is incorrect, repeat step 1 to 50 Once you get the backlash correct and the depth correct with a good even pattern in the bearing blue, mark the pinion nut position on the pinion shaft, remove the pinion flange, fit the seal and re-install the flange and tighten the nut to the correct position, then stake the nut ......

I done pretty much the same as you Bob, just some tidying the shed up not the new one.
I did catch one mouse...been awhile.
Haven't decided what I may get up to today...or I haven't been told more like it.
I haven't got word on friends Opp in Sydney yet.

Morning all, Sounds like it's cold.

Yesterdays golf game was cancelled. I had a spare hour before leaving, so I thought I'd just replace the washing machine tap which has a little leak.

Well, that turned into, I'll just fix the sheared broken pipe,
which turned into I'll just replace the weather board that split when removing to get to the pipe
which sheared when I tried to remove the tap
which was leaking when I turned it off.

Needless to say, that took more than one hour.
