40l Engel fridge

Post by BruceS »

Ok I have a relly that wants to do a little camping in isolated places.
She has a 40l Engel fridge that she's happy with but although it runs nicely going down the road & bush tracks she's looking for a solution for once she switches the vehicle off.
It's 4WD 4door Toyota & presently only has the original one battery setup.
She is busy looking into solar, batteries, low voltage disconnect etc etc.
I suggested she investigate looking into a Bushman or similar that is also gas operation.
She isn't really looking for a complete off grid setup that will keep her going for weeks at a time. It's usually just over night or a couple of nights.
Open to opinions please.??

I know someone in Mannum that could set up solar and a battery that would do the job ;)

Nebo, Qld. Still think a gas bottle over night is best choice for her situation.

Only if it is already a 3 way fridge, otherwise it's a new fridge, gas bottles and regulator and a gas fitter to install it all. the 40 ltr Engel is a 12/24/240vac fridge, basically the 240vac if fed into a transformer to drop the voltage and rectified to DC voltage.

Getting a 3 way fridge that small these days is a rare item at a price that would make your eyes water, as expensive as a stand up fridge/freezer for a caravan, so not portable like the Engel 40 ltr fridge.

For the $$ you'd need to pay for a 3 way chest fridge about the capacity you are talking, that actually works, you could buy a lithium battery and portable solar and still have change ..... and 12v for lights etc

We had an Electrolux 3 way chest type fridge/freezer ..... on 12v or 240v it either froze or refrigerated stuff depending how close to the heat exchanger the stuff was and how warm it was outside. On gas, never got the thing to work properly. either no cooling at all or it would decide to come to life and freeze everything over night. Had to put it outside the Kombi because on gas the fumes were killers ... as well as the smell .... It used so much power on 12v that the poor little Kombi alternator had trouble keeping. We ended up buying a Waeco 60ltr and still have it, build layers using the aluminium coated bubble wrap type insulation, it could be a freezer and fridge, freeze stuff before putting it in the thing and a layer of the insulation on top and the stuff stayed frozen for days.
