Think you may need to give more details Phil?
Is it for brakes in case the van comes unhooked?

Try Mr Google for the brand you have. There are a few different diagrams, but they all seem to indicate that it doesn't matter. I tried to load a screenshot but it is too blurry.

The Brake Switch for a Caravam is in effect a simple on / off switch.

The central pin gets pulled out and the internal contacts join, with the result of sending power from the active wire ( 12v ) down the nonactive wire to the van braking system.
Result= The van brakes are applied.
It would not matter which wire joins to which wire from the van as all it ever does is switch on the van brakes when and if the van becomes detached from the tug.
