Re: Provolt Lithium Batteries

The early sodium ion batteries suffered the short cycle life as well as weight issues compared to many of the lithium cobalt hand grenade cells. The recent second generation mass production product from CATL and the like have sorted both problems and now have a longer 100% DoD cycle life as well as better power to weight than the majority of lithium compounds .... there are still exotic lithium chemistry batteries out there, but the cost limits them to formula E at around the USD$235,000 mark for a set of gen 3 cells, and they often destroy them in a single race. The mind boggles at the potential price for the gen 4 battery with a capability of delivering 600kw and accepting 700kw of regen for the 4wd package ....

Some of the ideas mentioned for the new generation of sodium ion cells is a graphene matrix for the anode, hard carbon in place of the graphite used in the LFP chemistry and some of the strangest mixes for the electrolyte one could imagine, including polyethylene, better know as environmentally safe antifreeze

The 200Ah cells I'm looking at testing as around $140 each, so close to the cost of LYP cells ... without the Australian freight costs now imposed on anything with lithium in the name ... so that part alone may make them a better priced option than LFP/LYP cells.
The nonsense the Aust Standards have come up with regarding new lithium battery installations in RV's might put the sodium ion chemistry way out in front ... it will take them at least 10 yrs to catch up and add them to the "dangerous battery" list, if ever, because the lead acid battery lobby will probably no longer exist by then .......

Thanks Terry, very interesting reading about CATL advances, seems they are working with a number of battery types to suit different applications, even combining sodium ion and LFP chemistry. Will be interesting to see how their sodium ion powered cars go when they are released soon, still have to win lotto before getting into an EV, probably should buy a ticket. Would love to have the money to turn a big bus into a full Ev, with the roof and sides covered in solar cells giving ranges overt 1000klms. Imagine cruising Aus and never having to recharge, just stop for a few hours or a day after a long drive and then move on. With the advances, may only have to stop for lunch and recharge, or find lots of big hills for regen charging

T1 & NP,

For the benefit of "the rest of us", could you spell out (preferably in words of one syllable or less :P ), the acronyms you are throwing about?
CATL, LYP, etc...

CATL is the Chinese company name, https://www.catl.com/en/
LYP and LFP are very similar lithium chemistry cells, the LYP ( Lithium Yttrium Ferrous Phosphate) is a proprietary formula owned by Winston Batteries, LFP (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate) is the compound used in many of the safer lithium batteries, produced by a few Chinese companies and sold to all the other brands to put in their own cell construction.
THE LYP cells are the ones we were using for the last 12 yrs when T1 Lithium was building custom battery and electrical systems, at the moment, that is no longer happening since the fire end of April https://www.google.com/search?q=mannum+ ... _Wcao,st:0

The Tesla storage banks don't seem to be doing so well, hope it don't cost poor Elon too much !

As I recall the one in Geelong had a fire not long after commissioning, now the Rockhampton one has a fire burning in one section (commissioned 4 months ago) which may go on for weeks,

Makes you question this chemistry ?

Definitely, then the BMS, then the training the maintenance people have. I wonder what warranty Elon puts on these mega installations?
