Our "New to Us" Winnie

Post by T1 Terry »

Don't have any actual photos at the moment, but this will give you an idea of what version it is https://www.dealersalesandauctions.com. ... a=2&b=3198
Our unit doesn't have that lounge, instead, a two seater leather, the captain's chair by the door has been replaced with a storage box, door on top and one at the steps, and a number of shelves by the door to put stuff rather than having to climb the stairs just to put something small down. The dinette is a brown vinyl, not sure if that will stay or go, or just made look better .....

Hopefully we will take a few photos tomorrow .... ok, Margaret will take photos tomorrow. Transferred the rego into our name and sorted next yrs rego papers, will try for a pink slip before we head off.

Have decided, all the tools I have are at home, rather than buying even more tools that would be duplicated, I'll drive back to Mannum in it, at a subdued pace ;)

T1,
Typical of you. Had to go one better than GIRT!
A 31ft, Ford V10 petrol/gas Explorer. Vintage 2002.
Bear in mind that, apart from the motor & drive train, mechanical parts may be hard to find. Remember our trials and tribulations with the left lower wishbone. Had to wait for it to be manufactured in the US… three months!
Otherwise it looks in good condition. Hard to tell from the pictures, does it have a flatscreen or CRT TV?
Replacing GIRT’s CRT with a flatscreen mounted on a swing-up door gave us an extra overhead cupboard up front. 🤗
Good luck with your travels.

Ps. Has Margaret got around to taking photos yet?
Regards & God bless,
Ray

Ummmm. no she hasn't, so I'll add your name to the "get e wriggle on" list shall I
I believe your Winnie was on a Chev chassis and rear engine, this is a Ford chassis and front engine, kingpins an "I" beam front crossmember, so no wishbone arm problems .... and at the moment, no flogged out kingpin eyes in the crossmember like the last one had 8-)

You were upset enough about how much we paid for the Jimny, you wouldn't haven't ever spoken to us if we paid you what we got this one for ;) I kept expecting the police to knock at the door accusing us of stealing it, but at least it was not as bad as Bernie's bargain buys, they didn't have to pay us to take it away

If you picture this one with green outside, not gold, and a queen bed not singles, this is reasonably close to what it should have looked like, so add 20 plus yrs of hard wear and tear  https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/malaga/ ... 1322246670

Second look, and no it's not  Opposite the kitchen is a dinette, the fridge and cupboards are on the stove side and opposite them is the bathroom/shower, but that looks the same inside, behind that is the bedroom, so no door between the beds ...... so, sort of the same, but different

GIRT had a front mounted Chevy V8 diesel.
The dinette was behind the driver’s seat with fridge behind that. Sink on nearside.
Other than that very similar.
She also had a front beam axle.

How close am I with the ETA? 🤔🤣

On rethinking, it was probably a really heavy tierod up front.
Had to replace a couple of saddles attached to the thing which cracked/disappeared. Fortunately the rubber grommets remained in place. 🙄

So, the right hand tapped cover is off, along with the intake manifold, and all but the front cyl on the right hand side, No:1 it appears, has a clean intake port and back of the valve and valve guide are like just been serviced clean :? Under the tappet cover is also like it's just been washed clean :? :?
Checked the no:1 intake cam lobe was up, poured some diesel into No:1 intake port and it bubbled and quickly drained into the cyl ........ Loosened the cam mounts to allow it to lift a bit, the No:1 cam follower/rocker could now be moved a bit, poured more diesel into the port and it was still there a few hrs later .....

Clearly, there in insufficient travel in the hydraulic lifter to compensate for the valve stem height .... but unless the exhaust valve suffers the same problem, it should have been backfiring up the intake. Also, is that the problem with the other cyls with low compression?

If I make up a cyl leak down set up to put compressed air into the cyls, one at a time, with the cams removed and the timing chain cable tied to the cam sprockets, I need to make certain the piston will not be pushed down with the pressure turning the crack shaft and possibly causing the timing chains to jump a tooth. I'll have to see if there is a way to get the fan off and radiator shroud out of the way to see if I can get a socket and bar onto the crankshaft pulley bolt and tie that to the chassis rail .......

Next problem is, it that turns out to be the problem, someone did a full head service and didn't think to do the valve heights and that is what is causing this problem ..... how do I fix it without removing the heads?
To get the heads off, it appears as though I may have to remove the timing cover .... quite a task with the engine still in the chassis, radiator out, balancer pulley off and all the belt tensioners ... it is a one piece timing cover .....

Alternatively, I'll need to make up a method to grind the tops of the valve stems, square to the head, till I get all the valve heights correct .....

I'm not sure which job would be the hardest ......

A few beers and think on it might be the best choice for this evening :D

Wouldn't it be more time efficient, less worry, less $$$$ while you did the lighter things if you took it into a good repair shop to have it done. They might even let you camp up in their yard. :D :D
