Everything from fireworks to arson to not cleaning up bush litter has been blamed for the cause, but this one looks like it's going to be hard to deny https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/bi ... 67#image=1
Adds substance to the farm owners not wanting more high voltage power lines run through their properties .....

Re: Californian fires
That was the cause of the 2009 Victorian fires. Started on mates farm, but by the time he saw it and got there it was too big. Killed a lot of people and destroyed a lot of properties.
That was one of the drivers behind the creation of Blazeaid that so many rely on now.

Re: Californian fires
Knew a guy that used to operate the water gun in choppers. They flew in real close to high voltage lines and blasted the big inulators with very high pressure water, birds nests too. Pretty scary job. He is dead now.

Re: Californian fires
Considering it's the middle of winter over there, it's the ground conditions that turned the blaze into an inferno. Still can't understand why they don't put electricity under ground, where it would be safe from starting fires and not be cut off when there's fires or other natural disasters. With climate change, looks like it will only get worse and luckily so far this summer fires in Aus haven't reached that stage, which is a combination of weather and better management and response.

Re: Californian fires
I've often wondered the same thing about undergrounding all the power. The real reasons are time and cost. Secondary reason is access.
But every time we have a decent storm or bad fire the power is interrupted either by overhead lines burning down or being being brought down by falling trees etc.
Makes sense to me. Not.
I see there have been a lot of people in the US fires saying the water went off. That's what happen with a pump powered water system with no back up generators, when the power fails.
It's very sad to see what's happening in California right now.

Re: Californian fires
Tunnel boring machines, much smaller than the rail and hydro scheme ones maybe? Or a huge upgrade with freight trains, power and water, all through the same tunnels. Underground sub stations and the same ventilation tunnels used to move power and water to and from to the surface ......
If we can spend stupid money on Hydro 2.0, surely we can fund something like that .......

Because they have always done it like that.
And the end result of that is, that we will always get what we've always gotten.
If nothing changes, nothing changes.
Bureaucracy at its best.

I have wondered if heat dissapation is another reason for air strung wires ?

That would be one of them Bill. There are actually a number of valid reasons why aerial conductors are a good thing.
Usually all are trackable back to cost, one way or another.
