Re: Thought for Today
13.
13hrs 12 mins = 1.8181 days x 365 days = $663.63 billion dollars a yr ..... that's not even $1 trillion dollars, $3.8 trillion dollars Aus would be 5.726 times the annual Australian govt expenditure each yr ...... now multiply that by the conversion to USD, 5.726 x 1.5589 =8.92 blah blah blah ...... Close enough to 9 times the amount the Farcebook post tried to make out was an incredible amount for our govt to pay out each yr ...
The Aust gov is projected to run an AUD $27.6 Billion dollar deficit, does that help to put the big numbers into perspective, roughly 1/4 Trillion Dollars AUD compared to 36 Trillion Dollars USD ...... Our deficit would equal less than a weeks interest on the US deficit .... Still think the Aust govt is doing a poor job of balancing the books?
Our total deficit is less than the $28.6 billion the Aust Govt spends on aged care .... should we cut that out so the treasury shows a surplus each yr?

Yeah, missed the decimal point eh, but still, what I was trying to put across is the value in Aussie $$ is more that 1.5 times as much as in US $$T1 Terry wrote: ↑Thu May 22, 2025 11:33 pm A Trillion dollars is 1,000 Billion dollars
US debt is USD $36 Trillion dollars, Trump's Big Beautiful Bill would add another USD$3.8 Trillion dollars to that debt.
One Trillion US Dollars is AUD $1.55890 Trillion Dollars ..... does that put into perspective the level of debt the US faces and has to find a way to at least cover the interest every year, as well as pay out bonds that mature yearly, 5 yearly and 10 yearly, as well as the interest due ..... and the interest rate is climbing by the day ...... USD $3.8 Trillion added on top of that ....... Seriously, who would even fund it? Who would consider the risk of buying US bonds a good deal these days, not matter what the interest rate offered .... would you feel confident the money would ever be repaid?

Re: Thought for Today
US population 340 million
Aus population 27 million
The US GDP per capita in 2024 was estimated at $84,590
Australia's GDP per capita for 2024 is estimated to be around $66,669
Things need to be kept in perspective.

Re: Thought for Today
What is the projected US GDP for 2025? These figures need to relate to who is running the show at the moment, not who was running the show. The US 2024 financial yr saw a change in leadership in the first half of 2025, I very much doubt that estimate is accurate due to current events.
The fact the USA have that many people and the estimate GDP is so much higher than in Australia ..... shouldn't their deficit be better than the Aust deficit?
Now that is putting it in perspective

OK, poor wording, there are 1.8181 13hrs 12 mins in a day ...... That was the figure the Farcebook post used for how long it took the Aust govt to spend $1 billion dollarsNewcastle George wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 11:22 am 13hrs 12 mins = 1.8181 days - Wrong!

The Australian govt is actually estimated to spending around $734 billion, so their maths wasn't that great either.
The whole point was, $1 billion dollars sounds like a lot of money, but put in perspective and what we actually get out of it, I still reckon we get value for money

Re: Thought for Today
Yep, I've often wondered about that.
I'm not sure that that longwinded FBk post originated in Aust. I thought is was from the US.
Doesn't really matter anyway. The way that politicians from any country play party politics and blow smoke around, nobody will ever truly know who owes how much much whoever.
How much has the US govt spent on the space race???

Cheers

I’m thinking about starting a support group for procrastinators.
I already have a name for the group:
