Washing machines

Post by T1 Terry »

I was reading a thread on the other forum about whether to take a washing machine or not, some interesting replies. One was from lesley (Swisslulu) saying she used washing balls?? so rinsing wasn't needed :?
So, do you have a washing machine? What sort? Where did you buy it? Do you wash and rinse or have a different system?

Every one seemed to be talking about 2.2kg load machines, either twin tube or top loader or front loader automatics, so your 7.5kg machine is a big household sized unit Dottie?
How do the ECO wash balls work, any links to them?

I watched Kay doing her washing with her little twin tub and if I didn't have the space I would most likely go that way but I figured if one load takes half an hr then that suits me plus no need to do all the work and yes it is a domestic front loader.. The eco balls can be googled but I found them in Howards storage.. Kay and / or Lesley can fill you in more on the other brand of these wash balls.

The Lemair that caravan manufacturers install is reliable and works well. Does the job well for smalls but for a load of sheets or towels we use a CP laundry.

We have a twin tub sanyo in the Shwaggie.(looks like the old hoover twintubs) Looks like s good 4 kg, seems to use about 50l for the wash, and about 5 for the rinse. Perk about it is, the wash water can do multiple loads, and the next time we bucket from a lake or use non potable for the wash wont be the first time. It will run off the inverter no sweat, and provides a store spot for the dirty clothes. If it dies, we will look for the same

We also have a twin tub that runs off our inverter, you can wash anywhere that you can get fresh water, multiple loads in the same water, you can also wash by hand & just spin dry, we would definitely buy another twin tub.

If you use the wash balls or wool wash, do you still need to rinse? I think that was what was being said, you only washed and spun dry and the hung them out. If that's the case, then a twin tub would be a better deal wouldn't it? Or can the Lemair be set to skip the rinse cycle?
What size twin tub? I can't really see the sense in washing one sheet at a time so would a full sized unit be the way to go? Or does the size really matter when it comes to finding some where to store it? Where do you store it when you aren't using it?

We have been using the Lemair 2.2 kg. It was thrown in when we bought the MH but wasn't new. I fitted it into the bathroom. It is at least 7 years old that I know of and the only problem I have had with it is the waste hose failed. More than 4 years full time on the road and it has been great. We are limited to one queen size sheet and one pillow case per load. With that in mind it takes 2 loads to wash the bedding and that equates to 84 ltrs of water (42 ltrs per standard wash cycle). So if you can fit at least a 5 kg machine in then I would suggest doing that.

Good point Craig, thanks. Using a smaller washing machine won't necessarly save water. I guess a utility trailer behind the Mazda will be required, there isn't anywhere in there that a full size washing machine would fit, then it can be transfered to big bus when that's finished. Now to decide, a twin tub, top loader or a front loader..... will a twin tub use less water?
