Scooter needs attention
I have been given a little "Pride Mobility Scooter" mod # SC4450DXAUS It has buggered batteries 2x 12 agm's ( # ED12480) and a 4 amp charger needed as orig was lost. What I would like to know is is it better to replace these batteries or have you men got any other suggestions? ? lithium ?

Re: Scooter needs attention
Alan has one.
Just replace the batteries. They last about 1-2 years. No mucking about.

Re: Scooter needs attention
Dot, a quick search by Mr Google shows it needs 2 x 12 volt 40ah batteries. For the sake of simplicity, just get a couple of direct replacements and a charger to suit. Do you know if there is anything else wrong with it?
Cheers

Re: Scooter needs attention
If the supply of parts is anything like over here in the eastern states mob's that sell and service these things are evry reluctant to sell you parts as they want to sell you a new one and like most things in the medical side of things the prices they charge are a ripoff.
I've helped and elderly mate sort his Pride one out a few times over the years and it's worth shopping around for the batteries and bits as prices can vary enormously. The batteries are usually of a specific size and model to fit the space available but buy the best quality ones you can find.
Things like the coil springs (which eventually snap) on the front suspension are the same as mountainbike rear shock springs and can be bought on ebay for bugger all, just measure the open length and coil diamters to find ones that suit.
Most bits for the electrical side of things are available as they are generic or you can often find a substitute that works.
The battery charger is just a 12 or 24v charger of appropriate capacity to charge the batteries, treat them like you would a battery in yourr vehicle, charge them after use and don't float too much, regular use and charging is best.
We've repaired and beefed up a few broken bits, the hardest bits to source are the body panels as like i said they would rather sell you a new one than provide bits to fix old ones.
In NSW the NRMA will help you if you have a breakdown, even giving you and the buggy a lift home if required. Probably find the same in SA.

Re: Scooter needs attention
The one we had had a plug with about 4 or 5 pins for the charger socket.
Brian bought one very recently for his gopher as a spare I think.

Th multiple pin system is designed to isolate the scooter electrics when the charger is pluagged in, so that it prevents any operation of the machine.

How quick do you need it to be on the road Dottie? I could get Sodium Ion cells and build a battery that would have a lot more range, yet not weigh near as much as the lead acid batteries ..... up to you

Re: Scooter needs attention
Battery charger can be obtained from any dealer or search on ebay for charger for Pride and model but most are the same. I had a spare Pride but fave it away as my scooter is different. I got two batteries when I got them. New baby scooter still coming. Little folding one to use in shopping centres.

Re: Scooter needs attention
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions, I would of loved a fold up one but grateful for this for now. Can you put sort of supercharger on it? Thank you Prof1 for your suggestion/ offer but where are you going to get the time, you HAVE to get your winnie going and head off ASAP. G has been given the the job of sourcing the batteries etc, he has taken the seat off to clean underneath and if he can see anything else that needs attention. How fast do these things go
pretty soon we will be organizing scooter races, just imagine that sight.

Re: Scooter needs attention
Don't worry about how fast Dottie. Most large scooters are restricted to 10kmh
Small portables I think are 6kph. Will let you know IF I ever get it. Been waiting over 3 months now.
Won't need it till Marg and Terry get home, then time to catch up on shopping and visits to doctors and specialist waiting to happen. They all need coffers updated for their next holiday or car. Luckily most cost coming from car package. Last week exhausted me so nothing happening this coming week
Just daily walks, coffee with new neighbours and cuddles with Ruby
