I have tried this and it does work with NcAd batteries.

Place battery in freezer that can reach at least -18C

Leave overnight.

Remove from freezer and hit the battery hard but not too hard to break it! Hit it all over. This breaks the crystals and it will come better for a while. Charge fully after it cools a bit.
