Well, that's a reasonable position; if the original permit was for a business and not residential. They want a business set up here to generate employment, taxes and commercial rates.

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
Yeah, I can see that from a business perspective, but across the road there is a large business park with 5 of the 10 lots sold .... but it seems to have stalled at that. The automotive workshop up the hill has been bought by someone who is doing exactly what I want to do, across the road towards the shops, there is a service station that appears to have failed with an empty tin shed beside it, there was an outboard motor service shop down the road from our place that Dottie & George were looking at once, that never sold and it looks to have been withdrawn from the market.
It's not that they have much of a chance another business would be added to the town, more likely someone wanting to reposition that is already in town now and I think that might be where the council is being "guided" shall we say, to get us out of here ......

So why are homeless people allowed to live in backyards in caravans? Get onto your MP's and ask for their assistance You are homeless.

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
There was a place that burnt down near the ferry, just before the workshop fire ... now that place was junk yard and still is ... no one is pressuring them ...... There is more to this than a council wanting to tidy the place up .....
Margaret noticed a vehicle travelling slower than usual down the hill into Mannum, looking in the yard, when he realised Margaret was watching him while she was approaching up the hill, he looked away .....

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
Dot,
They are doing so within the council rules. Councils are recognising the lssue and adjusting for it.
In residential area, you still need a house, a way of disposing waste, power and things. The time allowed is about 3 months per permit issue.
On rural properties, the rules are a little different but still there.
Terry is talking about 2 years before the build even starts which assumes permits are issued for the design, costs are still within budget etc. I'm betting they won't be. The builder probably is to.
The way I see it, there are two options.
Fight it, grow old and go broke trying and end up completely homeless. Everyone will take your money investigating any idea. Every business will. Rhetorical question..... how much have you spent on this set of ideas. Builder, soil tests, containers, dome, plans etc.
No closer, but bank account emptier.
Where is the ' financial point of no return' ?
Or, second option
swallow some pride, face reality. .... Companies and council are probably watching you like a hawk.
Even Margaret noticed the car. How many haven't been noticed?
Swimming upstream is so hard. Save that energy for your future.
Stop wasting time. Coming up to 2 years since owning the winnie. How long do you expect to be able to drive it? (Health and mobility) Most stop about 75.
Time is running out.
Sell the slab, get rid of the junkers.
Quickly build a tidy comfy little cottage on the hill. Nothing extravagant.
Seek our a social worker at council and get them onside. An advocate to help you develop and implement a workable builing plan
Decide whether the winnie is worth keeping and using, considering cost to run, maintenance, parking and the like.
Decide whether it can still be part of your 'plan'.
But right now, according to Maslow; securing shelter, food and warmth are your priorities.

Great post Jon
good advice especially when both Margaret & Terry already have health issues, Terry needs to stop working on all these never ending projects & start exploring our awesome country.

Re: Our "New to Us" Winnie
We all have our things we like to do that keeps us sane, Jon with his bus mechanicals rebuilds and off travelling with his dog and playing golf, you with your bowls, Dottie and George with their garden and house, Deborah with her glass kiln work, John and Faye with their incredible garden, as well or Ray and Joy, RnB with his cooking .... mine is repairing and now converting vehicles to EV.
When you arrive home from a trip, you want something to look forward to doing, no offence meant to anyone, but none of what keeps you people going would work for me, so I need somewhere to do what I enjoy doing .... or what is there to make it worth getting out of bed each day ......
I simply don't have the fight left in me to battle the bureaucracy monster, so screw them, we will simply sell up and leave Mannum, it has lost all the appeal it had and all because of a self serving council and someone who wants to make a name for themselves .......
If they want the place that bad, then they will pay what we want, not what they think we will accept because we are desperate ..... NRMA Insurance learnt that lesson the expensive way .... there would have been no bonuses earned by those involved in the 13 mth battle, they would have been at least $15,000 better off if they had just paid out in the first place.
The workshop yard will never lose value, neither will the house block, we are in no rush to sell .... but we no longer have any interest in waiting 4 yrs and paying crazy money to build a house on a block that this blow hard from the council told us we wouldn't be allowed to park the motorhome on ..... because it is over 3.5 tonne .....
The place we just looked at certainly doesn't have a council like that, further up the road, at the end of a long laneway, we found a yard with at least 5 old busses parked and a heap of other interesting stuff
Maybe a kindred spirit

Yes, but on further research, it was purchased roughly 10 mths ago, reno/redesign and a lot of money added to the price from 6 mths ago ..... It is nice, but way over priced if the insurance and loan people's valuation is anything to go by .....jon_d wrote: ↑Sat Oct 25, 2025 7:24 pmThat's great Terry. We will wait for Dottie & George to give us an idea of what they feel their place is worth, keep looking and see what we find and decide from there .....
