It's only 5.8kW, so with a 6000w inverter I could run it off my 100Ah lithium batteries, will 6mm auto cable be heavy enough?

You're a mean bugga Peter, they were even going to throw in a wall socket so you could plug it in
I'm thinking it still would have sort of been self protected, the RCD would have thrown in the towel on overload the first time it was switched on, household powerpoint circuits are protected by a 16 amp RCD from memory. Heavens only knows if the unit is sufficiently isolated so it doesn't trip the earth leakage in the RCD anyway, even the light circuit in the fridge will do that sometimes if the wrong type of RCD is used. I can just picture the fuses in an older fuse box with the lump of fencing wire threaded through the fuse holder to stop it keep blowing
It really is a concern with hard wired appliances being freely available yet the information required to safely install any of it is not freely available, a system very poorly set up in my opinion.
the plug in grid tie solar inverter are another area of concern, someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed in the not to distant future as a result of these things. They do have a reference to mains supply required before they will fire up, but 2 units in the one supply circuit will keep each other unit switched on.
