Re: Greynomads B/Day
Thank you all. I’ve had a really gret time spreading the celebrations over a few days. And I’m spreading it even further on Friday when Son-&-Heir arrives accompanied by his fiancee and our lovely granddaughter!
Another three days to celebrate!
Unfortunately, atm I am on some heavy duty opioid painkillers, which precludes me from driving &/or drinking.
I’m considering an amnesty when S&H arrives, so I can open my sole remaining bottle of Grange Hermitage…

(I WAS planning to open the GH on my 80th… but why push your luck?)

Re: Greynomads B/Day
I have just opened (well S-&-H did the muscle work) my bottle of 1970 Grange Hermitage, and we are waiting with great anticipation as we allow it to breathe for a while.
The Grand Opening
The cork was still moist, and came out without crumbling.
Proof that it really is a 1970 Grange Hermitage!
The bottle was one of about eight which SWMBO purchased at a small suburban bottle shop in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs in 1974. It had recently changed owners, and the new owner reckoned the locals were only interested in buying beer and spirits.
Consequently he gathered up all the wines the previous owner had cannily bought over the years, put them in barrels on the footpath and sold them at $2.00 each.
In today’s money that would be about $13.
A quick search of the interweb indicates that, at auction, my 1970 bottle would now fetch something between $1770 ~ $5300.

EDIT:
The verdict: tasting notes on the web suggest that my 1970 bottle is past its prime and should be consumed fairly soon.
Well, if that’s true, its prime must have been pretty bluddy amazing, because after 51 years in the cellar (bottled 1974) it is was Nectar of the Gods!
GH is a blend of Shiraz and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon.
My preferred quaffing wine is Cab-Merlot because of its soft palate. GH smashes it!! Beautiful soft palate with a smooth fruity finish.
Well worth the $2.00!!

pps. SWMBO outdid herself with a magnificent spread for our Birthday/Christmas Dinner. The star of the meal was pulled lamb cooked low & slow over six hours!

Re: Greynomads B/Day
Sounds like you had a nice B/day and Xmas dinner. That bottle of booze you described is how I have been described as well, what a coincidence hey?
