interesting solar put to me

Post by BACAMICK »

hi guys , hope all are well out there :)
here is a interesting solar setup put to me my some house/stand alone solar people that stayed here at the pub last week , cant see it working but here goes :)

they said the best way to get good power from solar is [in my case and many others ] use say 4 x 200-250w 24v pvs put a microproceser on each pv , it then puts out 240v , combine the 4 and plug a 35amp smart charger into it to charge the batt bank up , sounds great but im sure there is a downside or we would all be doing it ?

1 i can think of is the smart charger takes around 7hrs to charge say a 500ah bank , recon solar is only good for around 5hr charge

Ummm...... do you have a 12v or 24v battery system? Converting DC to AC and then back to DC is only an advantage if you need to boost the voltage, every conversion between DC and AC uses some of the available energy, there are no free lunches, the equipment to change from DC to AC isn't cheap, 4 x isn' cheap starts to get rather expensive, then you need to tie the AC frequencies together so you don't create 415v 3 phase or some other strange wave form and voltage, that costs money and it eats a bit of the available energy as well, then the charger eats some more of the available energy..... I can't see it being either energy or cost efficient.

You can convert 24v panels into 12v panels with a razer blade and a soldering iron if you can get the right panels at the right price, they need to have a VMP of better than 32v but not more than 36v, you can then use a normal PWM controller to charge 12v batteries quite efficiently without payig through the nose for a special controller.

Maybe they meant a "micro inverter", that may just work, but they are a lot more expensive than standard panels. We are in the process of getting a 5kva system for home and one of the systems I considered was a micro inverter system. over twice the price of a 'normal' panel inverter system but the technology looks great

yep reread the scribble they gave me

microinverter NOT micro processer

looks interesting
