The Wyalkatchem temp range today is 11 °C to 33 °C and is presently cold on my toes.

Woke up to something strange around here. Opened the door and cold air blow in ..... well, I suppose cold is relative, 23* apparently, that was a bit of a shock to the system
Off for my shots and have things cut off, this growing old is so much fun, a new doctors appointment every day ..... if I was still employed by someone, I reckon I'd be straining the friendship by now ...... with all the time off, not from my natural effervescent personality

No guessing what I got up to yesterday...
I split 7 loads and stacked them around the back..
The temperature was kind for a change.. only 33 and a nice breeze.. light breeze again today but no clouds..so it will get hot .
Carol went to physio...she has five free thingys to do with the knee opps..
Nothing much else went on up here in Degilbo

Bernie how long do you leave the wood to dry before burning ?
Had anything to do with the electric style block splitters ? - i only get a tonne delivered (which i am sure seems to shrink each year )

Hi Eddy..
No I've never used an electric splitter.. I don't think they would work on Blue Gum or spotted gum..
They don't split straight .. and there have been a lot of electric one's on sale on market place.. makes me think they don't work...
Mine is a 30 tonne... with a pretend Honda motor..
I will probably leave this lot Of timber for two years before using it.

Friend at Kingston made a splitter out of the tilt ram off of a big Cat bulldozer & connected it to the hydraulics on his tractor that also had a saw bench attached.
He made up a splitter that operated in both directions instead of waiting for the return travel stroke.
I had some 'hard' welding rods so he ran a bead down each pointy edge. It could chop steel water pipes up!!
I saw it chop across grain on 6" red gum.
Mallee srumps were no match for it.

Mine bent the 1 inch plate at the end.
I had to weld a tag from the wedge to it and pull it back!

I'd go for one of those with the splitter that looks like an apple segment cutter that splits them into multiple pieces .... but more likely it will be the spinning tapered screw job that you just push the log onto, and it tears its way through from the side or end ....

Arm hurts a bit after the shots and the joints all feel stiff, but apart from that, no real side effects, so well worth the bit of discomfort ...

They're good for soft woods.

Pretty useless for big rounds and hard Aust' woods where you need to split sectors off before being able to split across the core.


My home made splitter. It's about 27 years old now.
