Steve & Bronwen's Escapade

Post by SteveW »

The departure - Monday 15th subject to a couple of things like waiting for her new glasses to arrive. Within a day or two of that at worst.
The plan - Nothing more specific than Melbourne - Adelaide - Yulara - Alice Springs - Darwin. Back down to 3 ways then east to the coast somewhere - a bit of time in Brisbane visiting several friends, to whom visits are overdue, then meander south towards Melbourne. About 6 weeks in all so not too rushed but, nevertheless, a bit on the go. Estimate about 50% of the days will involve some travel.
Not taking the toad because most of our travel will be open spaces where we can easily park. We have bicycles that we enjoy riding around towns.
Stay tuned. We will be looking for some clues as we go along even though we have the books and websites to assist.

OMG. SIX WEEKS to cover all that space? You are really going to be travelling a long way each day. Are you going to have any time to stop and count the daisies? We took 3 months just to cover FMQ last year, and we still want to go back and visit some places that we either missed or found out about interesting things to see since.
Are you on a limited time frame because of work/life pressure? I do hope that you can have some more leisurely travel in the future. It's not how many places that you can scratch off your list, but how many places that you have enjoyed, spent some time researching and met the locals. I am not trying to sound off at you, but you are really going to be moving a lot of the time. I hope you enjoy the travels and see heaps of interesting stuff.

It is fair to say that this is an exploratory expedition limited in time due to other commitments - it's a case of do it like this or don't do it at all.. However, a rough estimate is that we will have about 20 to 25 stationary days and we can move more speedily through stretches of the country that we have previously explored. I have been to all of these places, climbed the rock, etc., but Bronwen has not done any of the centre or Darwin.

Of course we could leave out visiting Dot to save time. But, would you? ;)

The focus of our current trip was to assist our iL's in there new van to visit Cairns whilst SiL's cousin was visiting from Ireland. (Any excuse :-) )

The 3,900 Km's one way was quite a trip, when I used google maps to find a similar distance across Europe I found driving from Moscow to Dublin was shorter.

Puts things into perspective dunit!

Maybe meet you in Germany soon.

Russell, that is an impressive bit of mapping and very interesting too. Thanks for sharing it. :)

Steve, there is no way I would risk upsetting Dot, so no you cant miss her on your whirlwind tour. ;)
Enjoy your low level flying trip. ( I am really jealous, it sounds like a great adventure, just too quick for my liking).

We spent ten months in WA last year...five of them in the SW corner. (So many wineries; so little time... sigh  )
Going back for more...

Our first m/h trip was four months (long service leave), in which we crossed the Nullarbor; saw Cape Naturaliste; up the west coast; a week in Broome (to catch our breath); over to Darwin; down the middle; the Clare & Barossa Valleys; then home to Melbourne.
We were driving one day, touristing the next, driving next day, etc. Drove 600km some days.
Now we are GNs we take more time, and limit driving to 300km/day max. :D

Steve,
Enjoy your trip, anyway... and look forward to when you can take more time to explore the great nooks & crannies of this country.
Regards & God bless,
Ray
