Lyrup is calling ... ! !

Post by BruceS »

An article in the Murray Pioneer newspaper in the Riverland of SA quotes the following. (article by Ryneisha Bollard)

Lyrup wants happy campers

Motorhomes and caravans can soon stay 48 hours longer at a Lyrup park as part of an initiative to attract more visitors to the town.

Renmark Paringa Council recently approved a 12-month trial period, to begin on July 1, allowing the vehicles to stop at SS Ellen Park for up to 72 hours. Campers wishing to stay longer will need to gain council permission.
The move came after consultation with community members, including the Lyrup Village Progress Group (LVPG) and one opponent to the proposal.
LVPG member Barry Clark said his group hoped the extended time limit would encourage more campers to stay at the park and patronise the local community club and general store.
Mr Clark said members would help promote and police the area to ensure the park was well utilised without visitors overstaying their welcome.
"We'll keep an eye on it... and try to create a bit more interest," he said.
Council director of corporate and community services Nathan Haynes said the park’s toilet block may need upgrading, and other facilities - such as signage and dumping points – would need to be installed if it became more popular for motorhomes and caravans.
Mr Haynes said council had already committed budget funding to improving the toilets’ septic tank system, but extra works would depend on the trial period’s success.
Mr Clark said he was confident the park’s facilities would suit a modest boost in visitors.
“For the amount of people that do use it, I think the toilets will be adequate,” he said.
“Most motorhomes have their own showers and toilets on board anyway.”
Regardless of the facilities available, Mr Clark said the park’s river front location – if better promoted – would help attract visitors.
“It’s a nice, relaxing place to stop,” he said. “It’s fairly peaceful, and it’s not far from Berri and Renmark.”
Lyrup resident Susan Taylor, who lives around 100m from the park’s campsite, said she initially opposed the proposal.
“I purchased my property because of the view, and I don’t particularly want to look out of my window and just see caravans all of the time,” she said.
However, Ms Taylor said she was supportive of a trial period to see how popular the site becomes.
“I don’t actually foresee people suddenly coming and pulling in,” she said.
“We don’t get that many people down there.”
However, the Lyrup Village Progress Group, which formed around two years ago, hopes to generate more interest in the town with council’s support.
Recent improvements to the river front have included a new walkway for river access and more tie-up points for boats.

Let's all support this community??

Over time more and more will discover this goose that lays and in my mind would wish to keep it quiet, thinking that if this gets out, then everyone will do it and lure away our source of golden eggs - so hush, don't tell a soul about the benefits of travelling ATM's.
Experience is a wonderful thing. It helps you recognise a mistake when repeated.
