Re: Wonderful Probiotic KEFIR & Smoothies
I've got 4 heaped dessert spoons of the lumpy stuff now, I add 2 cups of milk, but it turns into white lumpy stuff and water within a day or so, should I keep it in the fridge to slow it down a bit? Even when I stir it up it still strains out to white limps in colander and water in the bowl, so I’ve been throwing the water away.
It doesn't smell like off milk, more like yogurt, is that the correct smell? Even the stuff I strained off and kept in the fridge that looked like thick cream has separated to really thick cream and water now... is it still safe to make a smoothie out of or have I killed it?

No it's OK, Just too much kefir grains, you only need 1 tablespoon per cup of milk, keep the "water" otherwise it's stronger. Yeah put it in the fridge for half the day then take out and strain or make a couple a day in warm weather, it's the heat and the amount of kefir grains that is separating it quicker, (water & Kefir Cream) Yep smells like yoghurt is good. That thick stuff with separated water makes great cheese too!!
Cheers Wendy

JP & myself had our first cup each today we both had a hand in the straining & scratching out head's if we had got it right
we made a banana smoothie with ice & sprinkled with cinnamon.
We have our next batch on the go, this lot took 2 days I can really get to like this stuff especially if it does all it is claimed to do,
Keep trying Terry you may get a new lease of life

Re: Wonderful Probiotic KEFIR & Smoothies
Had my first smoothy today, 8 bits of unsweetened peach in it from the Goulburn Valley plastic from Woolies and 2 cups of the thick milky stuff stirred up to get the water back into it. I was prepared to have to tip it back into the chopper blender thing and add ice cream to make it drinkable, but it was actually quite a nice drink, not sweet, but not sour or anything like that, I quite enjoyed it. So now it's full speed ahead with production, the 4 heaped tablespoons of lumpy stuff with 2 cups of milk made lumpy stuff and water again by this morning, but only 3 tablespoons of lumpy stuff this time, the rest must be in the thick milky stuff ready for tomorrow morning. I'll do the LSA mix to go with it this time, although they will have to be pine nuts, couldn't find linseed at Woolies. We use Flaxseed oil (edible linseed oil) in my salad dressing brew anyway, so I still get that bit. Need to be careful with tiny seeds like linseeds and that sort of thing, they tend to set the diverticular disease off if I'm not careful, those little black poppy seeds are the worst.

Re: Wonderful Probiotic KEFIR & Smoothies
I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but my headaches are starting to ease, too early to tell yet but here's hoping. The cooler weather the last couple of days has slowed my plant down a bit, I'm starting to catch up on the reserve stock and soon will be straining the plant straight into the smoothie
At least the double dose of lumpy stuff makes 2 cups of the thick stuff with water on the bottom, and the warm weather will return soon so production should keep up with demand. It's doing wonders for my menopause, hardly any symptoms at all
